Generally limited to smaller structures. • STEEL • Widely used from thinnest sheets to solid sections. • Good in tension, not quite so good in compression. • Used in solid sections, reinforcing bars, tubular sections and cables • CONCRETE • Predates steel/iron as a construction material. Good in compression, weak in tension – hence reinforced concrete
