  3. Definition of a Framer: Delegate who helped create the constitution-the framed, or shaped, wrote it. *** Father of the Constitution? James Madison: his influence and plan for a new government plus his journal on the convention helped shape our new country.***

  4. Why George Washington was President of the convention? He was the most respected and honored man in the country. *** Why didn’t these people go? a. Thomas Jefferson-In France b. John Adams-In England

  5. Patrick Henry-He smelled a rat and would not come. He didn’t trust a strong federal government. Women-Not allowed Native Americans-Not allowed African Americans-Not allowed Rhode Island-Did not trust a strong national government

  6. Five ideas about government: a. National government should have limited powers Government should protect fundamental rights and promote the common good Need a strong national government to protect fundamental rights Need a republican form of government of elected representatives to make sure it serves the common good Need a system of separation of powers and checks and balances to prevent the abuse of power.
