  1. ITEA Easy Wireless project (EW-VTT)14.4.2005 Milla Huusko (milla.huusko@vtt.fi)

  2. Contents • Overview of the project consortium • Easy Wireless vision and goals • Technical background • Major results • Work structure • Work in Finland • Joining the project

  3. Easy Wireless -project • EUREKA/ITEA project • ITEA is a project clustering organisation • funding from each country (TEKES in Finland) • 16 partners from 5 countries • Total budget 12 Million € • 1.9.2004-31.8.2007 • In Finland: Nethawk & VTT • 1.5.2004-31.8.2007

  4. Partners

  5. EASY WIRELESS Allow seamless roaming between wireless networks while maintaining Quality of Service

  6. Easy Wireless goals • Allow service continuity with managed QoS and adaptiveservice provisioning for mobile users in heterogeneous networking environment • Strengthen the European expertise and competence in this area of communications • Pave the way for the interoperability of different networks supporting the transitioning to latest communication technologies

  7. Technical background • Different network technologies are converging in Europe and globally • New technologies (hotspots, EDGE, 3G) allow higher data rates enabling new services (VoD, peer-to-peer video, videoconferencing, etc) in wireless networks • Multimedia services require guaranteed QoS with high bandwidth and low latency • User acceptance for new services depends strongly on the user experienced quality of the service. • Future services need to be available wirelessly • Services need to be trustworthy and easy to use • Service provisioning must meet the user expected quality

  8. Major results of Easy Wireless • Open architecture allowing to realise service continuity with managed QoS in heterogeneous network environments • Demonstrators showing the feasibility and performance of the proposed architecture and mechanisms • Contributions to networking and communications standards • Scientific publications • Increase interoperability between different technologies and improve QoS capabilities in wireless protocols

  9. Work structure • WP 1 Business model and system requirements • WP 2 End-to-end quality of service • WP 3 Mobile service continuity • WP 4 Interoperability and concept validation • WP 5 Standardisation and dissemination • WP 6 Project management

  10. Work of the Finnish sub-consortium VTT • Develop architecture to measure, test and control the end-to-end QoS over heterogeneous networks (including cellular access networks, IP core networks, and wireless hotspots) • Qos measurements • Co-operation of QoS mechanisms in different networks • Congestion control, flow control and scheduling mechanisms • QoS-aware transport protocols for multimedia communications • Set up demonstration platform with selected network technologies in order to show the performance and feasibility of the architecture • Vertical handover between 3G and WLAN while maintaining QoS • Real-tíme QoS measurement tool • QoS measurements in cooperation with Nethawk Nethawk • QoS measurements and analysing methods

  11. REAL TIME QoS MONITORING TOOL Monitors the one way end-to-end QoS parameters

  12. Seamless end-to-end QoS in vertical handover WLAN GPRS INTERNET • SLA signalling • Mapping of QoS classes EDGE • QoS aware transport protocols 3G NodeB &RNC/Iub SLA • seamless QoS roaming WLAN-3G Nethawk 3G Analyser

  13. 3G PLATFORM • Provides access for real WCDMA terminals to Core network and Internet. • Enables easily the end-to-end service testing in 3G environment. • Makes optimisation and enhancements of QoS-mechanism in UTRAN and Core network possible without intruding upon public network. Iub = UMTS interface between radio network controller and base station Gi = Interface between gateway GPRS support node and external network

  14. Participating in the EW project • Funding already approved in Finland for VTT and Nethawk • Tekes –funding is 35-50% of the company’s total project costs • Next funding period: 1.7.2005 – 31.12.2006 • Each partner is responsible for it’s own costs • Possibility to get extra funding for R&D work, when the topics are in line with the project • International contacts • IPR can be protected • Standardization, the aim is to introduce project results to standardization bodies • Gather latest knowledge in end-to-end QoS research • New partners are welcome to join the project any time
