Standards for learning • Objectives: • Identify the Dewey Decimal System’s organizational scheme • Utilize the Dewey Decimal System to locate desired materials on the shelves • Common Core Standards: • Identifies and uses the organizational structures of a nonfiction book to locate information. • AASL Standards: • Locate books and non-print materials they need and want (AASL 1 and 4) • Begin to understand Dewey Decimal System classification and use it to locate materials (AASL 1)

  3. What is the Dewey decimal system? • Dewey decimal system Means of classifying books, created by US librarian Melvil Dewey in the 1870s.

  4. How do I find the book? • On the spine of • each book is the call number and this tells where the book is located on the shelf.
