  1. Medical Terminology Human Anatomy & Physiology 8/17/04

  2. INTRODUCTION • Why learn medical terms? • Ultimately, YOU are in charge of your own health • HOW? Testing/Treatment Decisions/Dealing with Insurance Companies

  3. WORD ANALYSIS • Divide each word into its component parts: • Prefix-small part added to beginning of the word • Root-essential meaning • Suffix-word ending • Combining Vowel-connects root to suffixes and roots to roots

  4. EXAMPLE • SUBGASTRIC • Sub= prefix, “below” • gastr= root, “stomach” • ic= suffix, “pertaining to” Some may combine root/root/suffix: Try: ELECTROCARDIOGRAM

  5. ELECTR/O/CARDI/O/GRAM • This one has 2 root words • Electro= electricity • Cardio=heart • Combining vowels • The suffix • Gram=record • Definition: Start with the suffix, then root, then read across • Electrocardiogram=A record of the electricity in the heart

  6. Sometimes it’s easier to combine the vowel and the root: Electro/cardio (combining form) • Using your Anatomy book and sheets provided, divide the following terms into parts, give the meaning for each part, then define the entire word. (do not use glossary!) EX) CARCINOMA CARCIN/OMA Carcin=cancer oma= tumor, mass Definition: a cancerous tumor *Notice that the definition is worded so that it makes sense (doesn’t start with the suffix)

  7. ARTHRITIS ADENOMA CEPHALIC CARDIOLOGY DERMATITIS DIAGNOSIS ERYTHROCYTE LAPAROSCOPY NEPHRECTOMY FIBROMYALGIA HEPATITIS THROMBOSIS HEMOGLOBIN BIOPSY PHLEBOTOMY GASTROENTERITIS HYPOGLYCEMIA ONCOLOGIST OPTHALMOSCOPE LEUKEMIA PRACTICE
