State of Healthcare in America-2009 • 50 million Americans without insurance • Denied based because not healthy or had a preexisting condition • Could not afford to pay • 175 million had access to insurance through employers • 25 million purchased insurance for themselves • $43 Billion dollars spend in 2008 to cover uninsured Americans-$400/policy holders

  14. The Decision • Read the Supreme Court’s Decision & Answer the following questions below your homework response: • What are the similarities to your decision? • What are the difference with your decision?

Roberts: “The Federal government does not have the power to order people to buy health insurance…The federal government does have the power to impose a tax on those without health insurance.” Dissenting Opinion: “To say that the individual mandate merely imposes a tax is not to interpret the statute but to rewrite it..”

  16. Conclusion • Do you believe that requiring everyone to buy health insurance is a good policy whether or not you believe it is constitutional? • Do you believe there is an alternative to the individual mandate that could solve the problem of the 50 million uninsured American?
