What has been achieved so far ? • TFS in production at DESY and ITEP: • 117 TFS with SiPM’s in ITEP/MEPHI, scint from Vladimir • 126/126 TFS from BC-408/SC-306(Protvino) • diagonal curved grooves, machined at DESY • 60 cm WLS-fibres are ready and polished • BC-408 ready, TFS production is under way • Protvino tiles machined in 2 weeks? • first TFS studies in minical with BC-408 and 3MA-PMs now • 36 pixels with 3/4 fibres to pixel in this month • minical modification in 1-2 weeks, • support bars for tilt to beam and crane handling • increase gap width by 0.6mm (to confirm by measurements) • minical electronic window ready, carries 3 MA-PMs and 36 pre-amps • DAQ software is set up, needs data for improvements and optimisation • Have plans/concept to put actual data on web for distributed analysis V. What next? • 14+(6) APD’s arrived at DESY, 20 more to be handed over in Prague • APD test at CERN/CMS, 4.-5-7-03, 20 APD’s only • other 20 to test in 2 weeks in Prague or CERN? • 25 pre-amp-chips from LAL arrive the 26.6.03 ??? • Pre-amp cards designed and ordered in Prague • pre-amp cards (3 with 18 channels each) available end July • need to order soon more super-reflector, new type? APD-test at CERN • With use of CMS test lab. and standard CMS preamps: • gain vs bias voltage • can we achieve a gain of 200 (500) ?? • capacity vs bias voltage (in 25 pF range?) • dark current vs bias voltage • excess noise??? • >> need quick answer whether we accept these APD‘s V. Design of pre-amps for APD‘s • 18 channel pre-amp cards • 3 cards needed + 1 spare • 2 mask for 9 APD‘s each, 5 mm sockets • APD photo-cathode is 3x3 mm2 • 4 holes in mask for mixing of 4 TFS-fibres • + 1 hole for LED-fibre • 5 masks to produce... • 18 potentiometers to adjust bias voltage • coupling capacitors to pre-amps (10 nF, 500V) • socket for 18 channel special LAL-pre-amp • line drivers to feed 30m LEMO cables to ADC’s V. DESY test-beam, „Strahl 21“ • energy 0.5 to 7 GeV, 1KHz (3 GeV) to ~1Hz (~ 7GeV) • need vacuum beam line in test area to get proper >5 GeV ?? • rates sufficient to get >10000 event samples • spill structure: 1 MHz, 80 msec periods, • repetition rate: 12.5 Hz • beam availability in 2003/2004/2005 • test in magnetic field? Which field strength? 2 solenoids, 1.0T • free diameter ~70cm • test in H1-compensator, 4T, free diameter? • all information on beams, energy resolution, rates, operation,.... • >>> folder of collected documents, copy in counting room • groups interested: • KEK/Tokio (Sept. 2003) • CALICE ECAL (later this year?) • Univ. of Texas, digital scint.   13. purpose of the beam test at DESY in 2003 • Tohru Takeshita of Shinshu University • Yoshiaki Fujii, KEK • (1) co-working with people who are interested in plastic tile calorimeter. • (2) to test the performance of the direct attached APD shower-max • detector by electron beams. Especially the position resolution. • (3) to test the fine segmented pre-shower detector whose read • out is via optical fibers by electron beams. Especially the • position resolution. • (4) to train young students having experienced at DESY. • (5) we need your detector to measure the energy behind ours. • (6) would like to use the Tile-HCAL DAQ KEK, the minical program V.   18. Energy weighting optimisation; Simulation study to set to limits to reach: ----split each calo tile in 2 tile-buffers, one for hadronic energy fraction, other for elm. fraction 1. Reconstruct energy without weighting, just sum all tiles 2. ...... With weighting of elm. fraction, optimise weighting to get best energy resolution (s ) of event sample 3. Add elm. and hadr. energy of cells (2 tiles behind each other) try to find cells with dominant elm. contribution, try amplitude dependent weighting, opt. s of sample 4. Compare with 2., optimise identification of “cells to weight” (containing sizeable fraction of elm. energy) 5. Vary cell granularity (1-4 tiles) find optimum s of sample 6. Vary tile sizes, start again at 3. V. Korbel, DESY

Studies for a CALICE PPT-HCAL Weight of 38 abs. plates is 6 t ! • Questions to discuss/fixe: • material of absorber plates: • steel • stainless steel • flatness requirements, costs • gap width • gap tolerances • gaps adjustable? • cassettes, material, sizes? • cassette thickness vs absorber plate thickness • final construction of stack module • 1 or 2 modules for different test beams? • Who builds stacks? • test in magnetic field?
