Daily Schedule • 8:10 – 8:30 – Attendance/Daily Review/AR • 8:30 – 9:30 – Reading/Language Arts • 9:30 – 10:30 – Workshops/Intervention • 10:30 – 10:45 – Recess • 10:45 – 12:00 – Math • 12:00 – 12:40 –Language Arts - Writing • 12:45 – 1:30 - Lunch • 1:30 – 1:45 - Read Aloud • 1:45 – 2:40 – PE/Science/Social St. • 2:40 – 2:46 – Clean up/Dismissal

  3. Library and Computer Lab • Mondays from 11:30 – 12:30 • Students should be checking out AR books within their AR reading range. • Students are responsible for returning their library book on time. • Students may want to invest in a low cost memory stick to work on projects at both home and school.

  4. PE • California Health and Fitness Test • Weekly pacer run on Wednesdays • Please dress appropriately • Tuesday and Thursday = group sports and exercise practice

  5. Common Core ELA • Texts are more complex • Emphasis on critical thinking • Requires students to discuss, evaluate, justify and explain • Standards are not taught in isolation Math •Bigger focus on models and visuals •Traditional methods are taught after students understand the fundamentals of the concept • Performance tasks that incorporate critical thinking • Requires students to discuss, evaluate, justify and explain

  8. Classroom Behavior Expectations • Be respectful to yourself and others. • Be cooperative. • Act responsibly . • Be honest. • Show perseverance. • Cell phones are to be turned off during school.

  9. Classroom Discipline Procedures • Each time a student breaks a school-wide rule they are to sign “The Book” with their name, date, and rule that was broken. • 1st signature is a warning. • 2nd signature is recess detention and a phone call to a parent will be made by either the teacher or the student. • 3rd signature could result in a referral and a visit to see the principal. • STUDENTS WHO REFUSE TO SIGN “THE BOOK” OR SIGN INCORRECTLY WILL RECEIVE ANOTHER SIGNATURE!

Homework Monday – Thursday • Homework calendar is given on Monday and will list the week’s homework assignments • Math Facts – Everyday • Reading Log summary – Everyday • Greek and Latin Root activities – Due on Friday • Students will receive recess detention for not completing homework or for not having parent signatures. • Please incorporate homework checks as part of your nightly routine. • Homework Calendar

  11. Accelerated Reader (AR) • AR Homework – Read 30 min. per night and a write a brief summary of what they read on their reading log. • Parents review and sign • AR Quizzes • AR goals will be set each trimester • Classroom rewards – AR Clubs • School wide rewards

  12. Math Facts • All students will start on multiplication and work their way through division • All students will start on their 3’s in multiplication • These are given on Monday and tested on Friday • Students are responsible for tracking their progress

  13. Weekly Reports Weekly Report Explination • Behavior • Homework • Classwork • Assessment Scores • Periodic AR progress • Comments and concerns ∗ Sent home on Fridays and returned with a parent signature on Monday

Supplies and Classroom Wishlist For the classroom: • Tissue • Baby wipes • Cleaning wipes • Ziplock bags For your child: • Dry erase markers (colored markers = $1.00) • Pencil pouches • Colored pencils and markers (crayons are provided) ∗ Please do not send refillable mechanical pencils, permanent markers, or pencil sharpeners without a shaving catcher!

  15. Field Trip • Monterey Bay Aquarium - more info to come • Volunteer/chaperone forms have to be completed EACH school year • Check with the Engvall office for the forms needed • See the student handbook for volunteer requirements

  16. Snacks • Students may bring snacks to eat at recess. • Healthy choices such as crackers, granola bars, and fruit are recommended. • Students may bring water bottles to drink in class, but please make sure it has a lid or cap.

  17. Birthdays • Birthdays deserve to be celebrated! • Contact me in advance if you wish to bring in treats, so we can make arrangements.

  18. Band • Starts in September • 30 min. twice a week • Students will be responsible for any classwork missed during band time. • There will be more information given after our band assembly in a few weeks.
