  6. Review of Last Weeks’s Lesson Cont.’ d • The Doing the Will of the Father is essential for salvation- Matt 7: 21 • We started looking at what God’s Will includes: • He Desires Mercy Not Sacrifice – Matt 12:7 • All of the beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount • Matt 5:3 -11 • The Pharisees had 613 commands to follow – Jesus gave us two!

  7. Sermon On the Mount • Let’ re- read . • Matt 7:21 –27

  8. Matt 7: 21 - 23 True and False Disciples • 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ • .

  9. Matt 7: 24 - 29 • The Wise and Foolish Builders • 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” • 28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

  10. Review of the Topics Jesus touched on Matt 7:13 -27 • 7:21-23 – False Disciples

  11. The Lordship of Christ • Matt 7:21 • “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does thewillof my Father who is in heaven.

  12. The Will of the Father • Matt 7:21 • “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does thewillof my Father who is in heaven.

  13. The Will of the Father • A Quick Review from Last Week….

  14. Reflection • Read Matt 15: 8 -9 • What were the Pharisees more interested in? • Following rules!! Many of them they had added to and perverted.. • What did Jesus say about their attitude? • They didn’t have or show Mercy! • Jesus’s Point?? • God desires mercy not sacrifice. It is his will that we are merciful!! • It is always “lawful” to do Good. • Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath!

  15. The Teachings of Men • Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!” • 3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[a] and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[b]5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

  16. The Teachings of Men- Cont.’d • 8 “‘These people honor me with their lips,    but their hearts are far from me.9 They worship me in vain;    their teachings are merely human rules. ’[c] ” • 10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”

  17. Teachings of Men- Cont.’d • 12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?” • 13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides.[d] If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

  18. Teachings of Men- Cont.’d • 15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.” • 16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

  19. Reflection • What was the error of the Pharisees? Why • Verse 5 • “But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it”. • Matthew 15:9 • 9 They worship me in vain;    their teachings are merely human rules. ’[a] ” • They Taught Mere Human Rules!(Teachings of Men)

  20. Teachings of Men • What are some examples of the teachings of Men today?? • Jesus is not the Christ- Messiah • Jesus didn’t really resurrect • We lost the original gospel so Joseph Smith was given a new one • Jesus was just another prophet • Mohammed is superior to Jesus Christ • Baptism- not necessary – Optional… • Once Saved Always Saved • Reincarnation • Karma

  21. Some teachings of Men Today • Catholicism • Mary is Queen of Heaven and is to be worshipped • As a result, just as He is now King of the Universe, she is Queen of the Universe. "And her kingdom is as vast as that of her Son and God, since nothing is excluded from her dominion" (Pius XII, Bendito seia, May 13, 1946). • No mentioned of this in the scriptures. In fact it is direct contradiction..Phil 2: 9-11

  22. What the Scriptures Teach of whom we should Bow Before • Phil 2: 9-11 • Therefore God exalted him to the highest place    and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,     in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,     to the glory of God the Father.

  23. More False doctrine • The successor of Peter: perpetuity of the primacy in the bishop of Rome. • As regards this point the dogmatic teaching of the Church runs as follows: 'It is according to the institution of Christ our Lord himself, that is, by divine law, that St. Peter has perpetual successors in the primacy over the whole Church' and that 'the Roman Pontiff is the successor of St. Peter in that primacy.'[26] • Source EWTN website

  24. Peter the POPE?? • When speaking of the primacy of peter, Vatican I appealed to the texts of Holy Scripture which established it. Now, when speaking of the succession, the Council, and in this it will be followed almost a century later by Vatican II,[27] proceeds not directly from Sacred Scripture but from the principle of indefectibility and perpetuity in the Church.

  25. The Scriptures Say?? • Matthew 23:9 • 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. • John 18:36 • 36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

  26. Peter Rejects Being Worshipped • Acts 10:19 -21 • 19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three[a] men are looking for you. 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.” • 21 Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?”

  27. Peter Rejects Being Worshipped • 22 The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.” 23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests.

  28. Peter Rejects Being Worshipped • Peter at Cornelius’s House • The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers from Joppa went along. 24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. 26 But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”

  29. Don’t Worship Created Beings! • Colossians 2:18 • 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. • Romans 1:23 • 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

  30. List of Scriptural Questions for Catholics • Why does it condemn clerical dress? (Matt. 23:5-6). • Why does it teach against the adoration of Mary? (Luke 11:27-28). • Why does it show that all Christians are priests? (1 Pet. 2:5,9). • Why does it condemn the observance of special days? (Gal. 4:9-11). • Why does it teach that all Christians are saints? (1 Cor. 1:2). • Why does it condemn the making and adoration of images? (Ex. 20:4-5). • Why does it teach that baptism is immersion instead of pouring? (Col. 2:12).

  31. List of Scriptual Questions for Catholics Cont. ‘d • Why does it forbid us to address religious leaders as "father"? (Matt. 23:9). • Why does it teach that Christ is the only foundation and not the apostle Peter? (1 Cor. 3:11). • Why does it teach that there is one mediator instead of many? (1 Tim. 2:5). • Why does it teach that a bishop must be a married man? (1 Tim. 3:2, 4-5). • Why is it opposed to the primacy of Peter? (Luke 22:24-27). • Why does it oppose the idea of purgatory? (Luke 16:26). • Why is it completely silent about infant baptism, instrumental music in worship, indulgences, confession to priests, the rosary, the mass, and many other things in the Catholic Church?

  32. The Great Commission • Matt28:16 • 16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

  33. The Plan of Salvation Confirmed by Peter and the Apostles • Acts 2:36-41 • 36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” • 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” • 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off —for all whom the Lord our God will call.” • 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

  34. An Example of a False Teaching on how to Become a disciple- Actual letter • If you have never done so, I invite you to present yourself to Jesus now and to accept his gift of love, to become reconciled with God. Read the following as a prayer:"Dear Lord, I confess that I am a sinner. I want to be a child of God. Please forgive my sins and accept me as your child. I invite you to be my Savior and the Lord of my life. I surrender myself to you in the name of Jesus Christ." If you prayed with sincerity, Christ accepted you into his Kingdom and you are now a Christian. Welcome to the family of God! I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord today. Thank you, Jesus! 35. An Example of a False Teaching on how to Become a disciple- Actual letter • You have an exciting life ahead of you. As you grow in the Lord, he will transform your life. These four suggestions will help you get started in your Christian walk: * Tell someone that you accepted Christ.* Read the Bible daily, starting in the New Testament with the Gospel of John.* Join a Bible-believing church.* Pray regularly.

  36. Reflections • What’s right with this letter? • It’s required to believe in Jesus Christ!!! • It’s essential to attend a Bible believing church! • It’s essential for us to pray! • What’s wrong with it? • It leaves out God’s plan of salvation and substitute the teachings of men. • Ask: Where is the scriptural support for such teaching? Where do you find an example of anyone doing that in the scriptures..(Some will say…the thief on the cross, baptism is a outward sign of the inward grace, etc.)

  37. Watch what you Teach • 1 Timothy 4:16 • 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

  38. The Sign of Jonah • Matt 12:38 -50 • 38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.” • 39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

  39. The Sign of Jonah- Cont.’d • 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

  40. Matt 12:43 -50 • 43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”

  41. Reflection • What did the people of Nineveh do? • Matt 12:41 They Repented!! • If those people who lived long ago repented when a prophet of God came to them to proclaim his judgment against them, how much more should we be willing to repent when God is proclaiming his forgiveness and mercy?? • So one of the things God wants as a part of his will is Repentance! • It is God’s Will that we REPENT!

  42. Matt 12:43 -50- Cont. ‘d • 46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” • 48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

  43. The Will of the Father - Repentance • Acts 17:30 • 30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. • (passages here on repentance)

  44. Repentance • Luke 13:3I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. • Luke 13:5I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” • Luke 15:7I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need torepent.

  45. Repentance • Luke 16:30“‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ • Luke 17:4Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.” • Luke 24:47and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. • Acts 3:19Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

  46. Repentance • Acts 5:31God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might bring Israel torepentance and forgive their sins. • Acts 8:22Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. • Acts 11:18When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.” • Acts 13:24Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.

  47. The Will of the Father - Repentance • What some things that we need to repent about? • Gal 5:19 • 19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  48. What are things we need to Repent of? • Sexual immorality(Fornication) • -Fornication typically refers to consensual sexual intercourse between two people not married to each other.[ For many people, the term carries a moral or religious association, but the significance of sexual acts to which the term is applied varies between religions, societies and cultures. The definition is often disputed. In modern usage, the term is often replaced with the more judgment neutral terms premarital sex, sex before marriage or extramarital sex. • 1. The evil ascribed to sexual acts that violate social conventions; "sexual immorality is the major reason for last year's record number of abortions".[Wordnet]. • Impurity – Committing and/or focusing on sexual or degrading thoughts and actions • Debauchery -a: extreme indulgence in sensuality bplural: orgies 2 • archaic: seduction from virtue or duty • idolatry - • 1: the worship of a physical object as a god • 2: immoderate attachment or devotion to something

  49. Acts Needing Repentance • Witchcraft – Pharmakeia(we derive the word pharmacy – which is the introduction of any foreign substance to produce a trance like state(drugs/ hallucinogens • Hatred- prejudiced hostility or animosity <old racial prejudices and national hatreds — Peter Thomson> • Discord - a: lack of agreement or harmony (as between persons, things, or ideas) b: active quarreling or conflict resulting from discord among persons or factions : strife • Jealousy
