  4. Course Objectives How information systems enable firms to manage organizational knowledge and enhance efficiency and effectiveness The role of IS in enabling firms to derive competitive advantages How information technology trend will be and How it may affect business organizations

  5. Course Structure The class has been organized into three sections: • Backbone of MIS • What is MIS? Why it is important? • Information Technology Infrastructure • Technical Foundations of MIS • Business Applications • How MIS is used in almost every business

Class Guidelines • Cellular Phones, PDAs, and other electronic devices must be turned off during class • Non-class-related use of laptops that distracts other students or in any way disrupts the class is not permitted • You are responsible for the impact of your laptop use! • If you enter late or must leave early, please sit near an exist in the front of the classroom • No eating during class • Please limit your conversations during class lecture Bottom Line – You are expected to be respectful of the instructor and your fellow classmates, and you will be asked to leave the classroom if your behavior in class is disruptive or interferes with class

How to Succeed in This Class • Read the Syllabus and Outline for important due dates, exam dates, and course requirements • You are responsible for knowing all course requirements • I typically do NOT send out reminder messages on due dates • It is YOUR responsibility to complete group assignments in on time! • Plan ahead for the unexpected. • Turning in an assignment late is costly! • If completed within 24 hours after the due date, 50% penalty • After 24 hours, you will not receive any creditfor the assignment • And, if you’re having problems, be sure to ask for help. • I am here to help, but it is YOUR responsibility to contact me.

Class Participation and Attendance • Attendance is mandatory • If you miss the class more than 3 times without valid reasons, you will receive the grade of ‘F’ • The missed classes will be ONLY be excused in the event of illness or major emergency with legitimate documentation or the instructor’s approval

Examinations • One midterm & final exam • Each of the in-class exams will consist primarily of multiple-choice, true/false, and short answers. • Questions on each exam will come from lectures, readings, and case discussion • You must attend the exam for your scheduled lecture • No early or late exams (makeup exams) to accommodate student’s personal plans • If you miss an exam, you must submit official documentation within 48 hours after the exam

Group Assignments • Students will be organized into groups for in-class case analyses • Submit group request by March 26th • The instructor will announce the teams for presentation in early in this semester • Each selected group will be required to submit PowerPoint Slides via email by the end of the case assigned class • In order to participate in class discussion, each student must bring at least two questions regarding to the assigned case • Each student must submit discussion questions at the end of the case assigned class! • Each student must submit peer evaluation form at the end of semester

Group Assignments (Continued) • 6 business cases • Case 1: UPS competes globally with information technology • Case 2: Modernization of NTUC Income • Case 3: Soundbuzz’s Music Strategy for Asia-pacific • Case 4: Salesforce.com: Cloud Services Go Mainstream • Case 5: Google, Apple, and Microsoft Struggle for Your Internet Experience • Case 6: Amazon vs. Walmart: which Giant Will Dominate E-commerce • Please refer to the tentative class schedule for the assigned date.

  15. Evaluation Criteria • Presentation • Organization, Subject knowledge, Visual Aids, Eye contact, etc. • Please refer to syllabus for more details

  16. Grading Policies Your final grade can be up or down graded significantly based on the peer evaluation result & extra credit points

  17. Save Yourself! • Extra points will save you • Participate in class discussion • Ask/answer questions • Present your cases in front of classmates

  18. Academic Integrity • Zero tolerance policy on cheating! • Students found guilty of academic misconduct face penalties ranging from lowering of the course grade to suspension from the University • My policy as an instructor is to be very trusting—but to punish academic misconduct as severely as possible if that trust is violated

  19. Appealing a Grade • You must write a paragraph explaining your position within seven days after receiving graded assignment • After reviewing your explanation, the instructor will either award you additional points or schedule a meeting with you to discuss the disputed issue(s)

  20. Final Thoughts (words of wisdom to survive in the class) • Always remember the 20/80 rule • Always maintain “Learning by Doing” and “Do-It-Yourself” attitudes
