  1. Grid Perspectives & SURA Regional ActivitiesDecember 2005 Mary Fran Yafchak IT Program Coordinator, SURA maryfran@sura.org

  2. Some Perspectives on… • What is a grid and why bother? • SURA regional grid activities • How to use this workshop

  3. What is a Grid? • Project Grids • Local, regional, national or international – virtual organization (VO) as the boundary • Research Grids • Grids to research…Grids! Distributed computing, virtual machines, how to share, how to scale • Grids as another type of IT infrastructure • Department -> enterprise/campus -> public? • The Grid (InternetX?) • As “seamless” and exciting as plugging in a lamp

  4. So Is It About Resources… • Broaden access to unique resources • Increasing number of “expected” users but also access for “unexpected” users • Create Grid gestalt • Develop mega-powerful capabilities by combining the most powerful that we have now • Orchestrate less powerful resources so the whole is greater than the sum of the parts • Recoup “lost” or wasted resources • Use systems during times of typical non-use; make use of systems that might be discarded

  5. …And Combining Resources? Different ways to think about it: • Greater Access to High Performance Computing Resources • Creation of a new High Performance Computing Resource • Or maybe…it’s not High but simply Higher Performance Computing (revive, reuse)

  6. Or Is It About Boundaries? • Organizational Boundaries • Target communities (but blurring…) • DOSAR, OSG (being presented here today) • Enterprise (campus grids a special case?) • UTGrid, MGRID (being presented here today) • Building a Campus Grid (see case studies handout) • Government & cultural borders • TIGRE (Texas Internet Grid for Research & Education) • Similar to local, intra-, inter-, Inter-net?

  7. More on Boundaries • Type-of-Use Boundaries • Computational Grid? Data Grid? Storage Grid? Visualization Grid? Application Grid? Ah! Reminds me of a time… • A “Web browser” or something more? http://www.sura.org

  8. More on Boundaries • Type-of-Use Boundaries • Computational Grid? Data Grid? Storage Grid? Visualization Grid? Application Grid? Ah! Reminds me of a time… • A “Web browser” or something more? http://www.sura.org ftp://wuarchive.wustl.edu

  9. More on Boundaries • Type-of-Use Boundaries • Computational Grid? Data Grid? Storage Grid? Visualization Grid? Application Grid? Ah! Reminds me of a time… • A “Web browser” or something more? http://www.sura.org ftp://wuarchive.wustl.edu telnet://denver.ipac.caltech.edu

  10. More on Boundaries • Type-of-Use Boundaries • Computational Grid? Data Grid? Storage Grid? Visualization Grid? Application Grid? Ah! Reminds me of a time… • A “Web browser” or something more? http://www.sura.org ftp://wuarchive.wustl.edu telnet://denver.ipac.caltech.edu news://alt.binaries.mac.applications

  11. More on Boundaries • Type-of-Use Boundaries • Computational Grid? Data Grid? Storage Grid? Visualization Grid? Application Grid? Ah! Reminds me of a time… • A “Web browser” or something more? http://www.sura.org ftp://wuarchive.wustl.edu telnet://denver.ipac.caltech.edu news://alt.binaries.mac.applications gopher://nysernet.org

  12. More on Boundaries • Type-of-User Boundaries • Researchers • Faculty • Students? For example, Georgia State University: • Multiple Genone Alignment application on SURAgrid • Distributed Muon Detector Project (see case study handout) • Staff? Home users? • Folding@home, SETI@home, fightAIDS@home, etc. • Initially passive. More active some day? (“FuelOil@home”…)

  13. On Boundaries in General… • Good news • Help divide & conquer design and implementation • Can produce results quickly for a target community • Bad news • Lead to lack of awareness of parallel efforts, common needs • False sense that services can be developed serially Working in parallel can produce great synergy, bring value from common knowledge & solutions, speed us more quickly to… The Grid.

  14. SURA Regional Grid Activities • HPC-Grid Initiatives Planning Group • SURAgrid • Cyberinfrastructure Workshop Series • Intersections with programs: • SCOOP (SURA Coastal Ocean Observing & Prediction) • SURA Biohealth Initiative

  15. HPC-Grid Initiatives Planning Group • a.k.a. “GridPlan” • High level advisory group for strategic alignment of SURA grid activities • Focusing in four major areas: • Grid Infrastructure • Grid applications • Funding & partnership development • Awareness & outreach

  16. Ed Seidel, CCT/LSU Jed Diem, Tulane Peter Highnam, NIH Stephen P. Moore, Georgetown University Paul Avery, University of Florida Richard Newman, Florida Institute of Technology Amy W. Apon, University of Arkansas Daniel A. Reed, University of North Carolina John (Jay) R. Boisseau, TACC/UT Austin John R. Rose, University of South Carolina Kelvin K. Droegemeier,. University of Oklahoma Art Vandenberg, Georgia State University Sara J. Graves, University of Alabama in Huntsville HPC-Grid Initiatives Planning Group Current members:

  17. SURAgrid • Multi-institutional effort to develop regional grid infrastructure • Twenty-two institutions currently participating, SURA members and beyond • Multiple foci • Immediately useful infrastructure • Grid R&D • Forum to share and gain experience • For more information • See handout in workshop packet • Dinner group at Collaborators Reception

  18. Cyberinfrastructure Workshop Series • Provide ongoing education in grid technology • Multi-year program, for as long as topic is timely • Addressing grids for general & community-specific use • So far: • Grid Applications Planning & Implementation • January 2005, at Georgia State University • December 2005, at Texas Advanced Computing Center • Including: “Grid Technology: The Rough Guide” • Life Sciences & the Grid, January 2006, at VCU • Contemplated: • More on grid technology - repeat high-level, add hands-on • More community-specific - coastal science/SCOOP, life sciences follow-on, [your community here?]

  19. Program Intersections: SCOOP • Create infrastructure for distributed Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) • Serve as model for the national effort • Discovery & sharing of observational data • Modeling, analysis & delivery of real-time data • Grid technologies being explored to enable full vision where applicable • For more information: • http://www1.sura.org/3000/3300_Coastal.html

  20. Program Intersections: Biohealth • Newly-established initiative • Lead: Bob Reynolds, University of Virginia • Consulting: Jay Sanders, Global Telemedicine Group • Potential target areas • Development of SURA Regional Information Healthcare Organization (RHIO) • Advance “next generation” applications in: • Medical modeling & simulation • Medical training & education • Leverage activities such as the Life Sciences workshop to bring community together

  21. How to Use This Workshop • Overview • Not to find a single definition but to contemplate what’s possible - don’t stress over semantics! • Parade of Grids & How to Grid-enable an Application • Notice diversity in focus, approach and stages of deployment - something to learn from each. • Ask-A-Grid-Expert • Experts on the panel and experts in the audience – Share! • Breakouts, Lunches & Receptions • Hot topics, more detail, like-minded collaborators - Participate! • Check out the latest technology from the sponsors • Further Context for Implementation • Because deployment doesn’t take place in a void…
