  1. Nikkei Business Publications Company-Wide Project Creating Shared Value --Taking First Steps Toward the Future-- RebuildNippon Phase 1 CVS stands for Creating Shared Value, a concept presented by Professor Michael Porter at Harvard University. It aims to achieve growth in business while solving social problems. 2011.4.18

  2. Purpose and Outline of the Project This project aims to serve as a guidepost in the path to revival of the Japanese industry. Taking a fresh view of management, information technology, manufacturing, distribution, and infrastructure, we would like to present new visions that help create tough Japan. We will consolidate all necessary information so that people of different industries and businesses will be able to connect with each other beyond boundaries, and generate new power. • Company-Wide Project Site Rebuild Nippon • Our B-to-B magazines and online sites get together to launch a website dedicated to the recovery of the Japanese economy. It also serves as a portal site for a variety of channels, including seminars, special editorial issues, and a consolidated facebook. A unified logo of Rebuild Nippon project will be borne by all the related projects of respective magazines and websites. We put together all our expertise to deliver useful information for reconstruction. • Announcement • Rebuild Nippon project will be announced through Nikkei BP media, as well as The Nikkei, The Financial Times or The Wall Street Journal (tbc), The Economist (tbc), and other media with influence over the industries both at home and abroad. • Project Partners • Companies in agreement with the purpose of our project will have opportunities to communicate their ideas via various Nikkei BP vehicles to contribute to the revitalization of the Japanese economy.

  5. 1. Rebuild Nippon Site: Six Main Categories Reconstruction Management At the great earthquake this time, not a few companies might have felt that the managerial issues that are long hidden, or they chose to ignore, surfaced and confronted them one after another. In this section, ideas for reforms that open doors to new growth paths will be discussed with experts using case studies. Business Continuity Plan (BCP) BCPs prepared before the disaster worked successfully with some companies, but failed with others. What made the difference? Taking lessons from the disaster, the section provides helpful information for reviewing and/or revamping your BCP. Power Saving, Summer Time Electricity shortage is a pressing challenge with the approach of summer. While trying to save electricity through technological innovations, some companies have already started to make an even larger reform in employees’ working system by adapting summer time, and/or night, weekend, or holiday shift. What are the problems facing these forerunners and what conclusions have they reached? Issues around power saving will be discussed from both a short-term perspective and mid-and-long-term perspectives. SCM and Production Systems Industrial community newly realized the threat to their production system when the supply chains get cut off. In order to stay closely connected with manufacturers across the world and produce and supply products in a stable manner, where is an appropriate location for the base, how should they manufacture, and what are the appropriate transportation means and inventory levels? The section considers the recovery of Japan’s manufacturing in relation with the global industry. Changes in Consumption Structure The disaster made a great impact on people’s mind and their consumption behaviors. “Cheer-up” products and services are being developed in order to support the afflicted areas and overcome excessive self-restraint. There is a new movement called “Smart Life”; consumers are constantly asking themselves “What’s the right thing to do?”, and live with richness of the heart while connecting with others. The section analyzes the changing consumption styles from both consumers’ and businesses’ points of view. Reconstruction of Infrastructure We came to a point where the shape of social infrastructures—energy, architecture, water system, transportation, and information system—should be given serious reconsiderations. In addition to the toughness in a time of disaster, efficiencies in usual condition and responsiveness to the aging society should be considered as well. How can we build a next-generation city using IT and other advanced technologies, and how can businesses involve themselves in the process?
