  2. WP3: Harmonizing technological aspects • General Objectives: • To provide a common base for the operational use of FerryBoxes, gliders, fixed platforms along European coasts • To review the current status of existing systems in operational use in European seas • To define the best technical practices for compatible, robust and cost-effective systems • To define procedures for harmonizing and merging quality assessed FerryBox and Fixed Platform data at regional (ROOS) level • To define procedures and technological solutions for integration and testing of new sensors on these systems PARIS – Maison de la recherche - 24 & 25 May 2011

  3. WP 3: Task 3.1 FerryBox Objectives: • review current status of existing FB systems (e.g. sensors, quality control, data handling): • review best technical practices of the existing FB systems • harmonize the resulting data • provide technological solutions to integrating new sensors (from WP10) into FBs • define consensual procedures for using FerryBox data in validation of earth observation data Tasks: • 3.1.1: Review current status of existing FB systems (flow-through systems, sensors, quality control, data handling) • 3.1.2: Best practice of FB systems (flow-through system, sensors, operation procedures, antifouling, control mechanisms, data handling) • 3.1.3: Harmonization and merging quality assessed data from FB systems in ROOS regions • 3.1.4: Test and integration of new sensors and best practices (tightly linked to WP10. PARIS – Maison de la recherche - 24 & 25 May 2011

  4. WP 3: Task 3.2 Gliders Objectives: • Review the current status of the existing glider fleet in operational use in European seas. • Define the best technical practices for operation of a fleet of gliders (general strategies for glider operation in coastal and shallow areas, implementation of tools for path planning…) Tasks: • 3.2.1 Review current status of glider operations in Europe (in coordination with the Gliding Observatories network) • 3.2.2 Define the best technical practices for operation a fleet of glider PARIS – Maison de la recherche - 24 & 25 May 2011

  5. WP 3: Task 3.3 Fixed Platforms Objectives: • reviewing the current status of existing systems in operational use in Europe • defining best technical practices for compatible, robust and cost-effective systems on a variety of fixed platforms • defining procedures for harmonizing and merging quality-assessed high-frequency in situ data across regional seas (e.g. the North Sea) • identifying gaps in the present coverage • proposing technological solutions for the integration and testing of new sensors on fixed platforms • sharing data with mobile platforms and remote sensing to create new integrated products PARIS – Maison de la recherche - 24 & 25 May 2011

  6. WP 3: Task 3.3. Fixed Platforms (continue) Tasks: • 3.3.1 Review of the current status of all existing fixed observing sites in European waters • 3.3.2 best practiceof fixed platform technology • 3.3.3. Harmonization and merging quality assessed data from fixed platform systems in ROOS regions • 3.3.4.Comparison of new sensors and assessment of their applicability for fixed platforms (strong relationship to WP10) PARIS – Maison de la recherche - 24 & 25 May 2011

  7. WP 3: Deliverables & Milestones Deliverables • D 3.1:Report on current status of FerryBox systems M09 • D 3.2: Report on current status of gliders observatories M15 • D 3.3: Review of current marine fixed instrumentation M21 • D 3.4: Report on new sensor developments M36 • D 3.5: Conclusion report M42 Milestones: • MS28 Report on activities M42 PARIS – Maison de la recherche - 24 & 25 May 2011

  10. WP 3: Task 3.1 FerryBox Action (working plan) first year: FerryBox (responsible David Hydes): • review current status FerryBox : • questionnaire WP4 <>WP3 <-> WP2 •  D 3.1. report status FerryBox (M09 = Jan 2012) • review best practiseentire infrastructural chain of data acquisition from: sensor (performance, robustness, accuracy, etc.) to supporting system (cabling, electric and electronic components, critical sub systems such as debubbling, pumping, etc.). WP3 <-> WP4 • First Workshop on 30 – 31. August 2011 (connected to 4th FB-Meeting (1-2 Sept at HZG) Organizer: David, Willi, support by Seppo & George? PARIS – Maison de la recherche - 24 & 25 May 2011
