  1. Condition monitoring - a Class perspective Eirik Sanderlien and Jan Bühring Andersen, DNV Machinery Ships in Operation 02. April 2008

  2. Condition based maintenance, CBM • Why do Condition monitoring • Optimization • Class follow up • Challenges when doing Condition Based maintenance • DNV’s experience related to Condition Based maintenance • DNV; the Class perspective © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  3. If successfully implemented Improved spare part control Reduced opening up, maintenance introduces damages and maintenance costs/time Flexible maintenance intervals due improved knowledge & control of machinery, availability, performance and condition documented. Improved crew motivation © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  4. Why do condition monitoring? Class related to Condition Based Maintenance • Avoid unnecessary opening up • Class usually either rely on 5 year class intervals or makers maintenance intervals • By the use of trending of the equipments condition and a DNV approved Machinery CM program/ survey arrangement, maintenance intervals can be based on the actual condition of the equipment • Cost beneficial • Less time spent on survey/ inspection / opening up: • Only annual audits of an approved CM program © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  5. Why is Condition based maintenance a challenge? • Implementation of CBM • Frequent crew changes, no formalised qualification scheme • One onshore org., several offshore org. • Investment horizon • Procedures • The overall maintenance approach • Not defined • Backed by top management/ all involved parties? • Follow up • Training • Analysis • Routines • Actions taken © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  6. How to manage the challenge? © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  7. Implementation of CBM 1st approach • Install newly purchased equipment on board and wait for the success stories! Technology © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  8. 2nd approach • Controlled use of the technology • Establish a company CBM work process including several aspects. • Establish a CBM company culture. • Measure and follow up that expected CBM benefits are realised! Work process Technology Culture * Implementation of CBM © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  9. Overall maintenance approach © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  10. Strategy & Goals Responsibility QA Company procedures PMS Equipment & tools Training Work procedure Everything must work together • Ensure that CBM handling meshes with company Strategy & Goals • Fix broken teeth! • Insert missing wheels and ensure proper lubrication * © Det Norske Veritas AS. 12. DNV Class experience • Developing the strategy • Include the crew • Management involvement • Establish time horizon • Analysis by 3 part or crew • Implementation • Maintenance approach reflected in company / working procedures and PMS • Training of crew • Procedures implemented onboard © Det Norske Veritas AS. 14. Machinery CM: • All machinery (subject to Class); • Vibration analysis (not including diesel engines) • Oil analysis • Temperature/ pressure monitoring • Thruster/ Water jet CM: • Propulsion and/ or DYNPOS thrusters/ Water jets; • Vibration analysis of bearings and gears • Oil analysis • Turbine CM: • Propulsion Steam turbine plants: • Main and Aux turbines • Reduction gears • Turbo generators • Steam driven pumps © Det Norske Veritas AS. 15. DNV: Machinery CM Normal approach of approval / surveys related to CM Company approval and Vessel specific approval Survey Arrangement CM is granted! Annualsurvey Initial survey on board © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  16. Company approval • Based on documents from the management covering: • Maintenance Strategy • Philosophy • responsibility chart • Training programme and plan • Future crew members • Elements in training programme • Crew rotation with regards to maintain qualified personell on board at all times © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  17. Based on documents from the management covering: - Monitoring methods • Detailed description of CM technique used • Component information / forcing frequencies • Schematic sketch of each component with clearly marked measuring positions • Frequency ranges/Baseline data/Pre-defined alarms • Relevant pre-defined actions based on cm results - Condition Monitoring equipment • Equipment data sheets (sensors, collectors, analysing system) - Implementation in PMS • Examples of cm jobs in the PMS • Procedures on how to handle cm results - Programme for oil analysis • Vessel specific approval © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  18. Initial survey • Including verification of • Crew familiarity with measuring equipment • Crew familiarity with interpreting measurement results (spectra)/trends • Marking of measuring positions • Baseline measurements • Requirements / guidelines related to draft / sea state / engine load © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  19. Survey Arrangement Condition Monitoring • The survey arrangement CM is granted and certificate issued based on: • Company approval • Vessel specific approval • Acceptance of results from Initial survey © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  20. Annual survey • Main objective is to confirm that the system is working as approved/intended • Verify that the CE is familiar with the objectives of this survey arrangement • Verify the crew familiarity with equipment and measured results • Evaluation of measurements since last annual • Annual CM survey is credited, not the machinery items • Machinery items are credited after overhaul © Det Norske Veritas AS. 21. DNV’s Machinery survey arrangement characteristics: *) Initial survey fee not included! © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  22. Machinery survey Arrangements • Machinery Survey Arrangement – DNV Fleet Updated 21. September 2007 © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  23. Condition based maintenance is the future! • Increased pressure in the market • Less time for maintenance • No unnecessary maintenance • More predictability • Planning of down time and avoid unscheduled maintenance • Better spare part control © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved

  24. DNV Rule references: • DNV Rules, Ships in Operation: • Pt. 7 Ch. 1, Sec. 8, July 2007 • Classification Note 10.2 • Guidance for condition monitoring, January 2003 • New updated version under preparation • valid from medio 2008 © Det Norske Veritas AS. All rights reserved
