  5. The Rules of Engagement

  6. The Rules of Engagement Rule # 1 You Cannot Blame Others

  7. The Rules of Engagement Rule # 1 You Cannot Blame Others And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”

  8. The Rules of Engagement • Rule # 1 You Cannot Blame Others • He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” • (Genesis 3:8-13 ESV)

  9. The Rules of Engagement Rule # 1 You Cannot Blame Others Rule # 2 You Cannot Run From the Enemy

  10. The Rules of Engagement Rule # 2 You Cannot Run From the Enemy Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him. (Matthew 4:1-2,11 ESV)

  11. The Rules of Engagement Rule # 1 You Cannot Blame Others Rule # 2 You Cannot Run From the Enemy Rule # 3 You Cannot Fight Alone

  12. The Rules of Engagement Rule # 3 You Cannot Fight Alone Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles,

  13. The Rules of Engagement • Rule # 3 You Cannot Fight Alone • to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.[One Body with Many Members] For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

  14. The Rules of Engagement • Rule # 3 You Cannot Fight Alone • For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be?

  15. The Rules of Engagement • Rule # 3 You Cannot Fight Alone • As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, which our more presentable parts do not require.

  16. The Rules of Engagement • Rule # 3 You Cannot Fight Alone • But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. • (1 Corinthians 12:4-26 ESV)

  17. The Rules of Engagement Rule # 1 You Cannot Blame Others Rule # 2 You Cannot Run From the Enemy Rule # 3 You Cannot Fight Alone Rule # 4 You Cannot Use Enemy Tactics

  18. The Rules of Engagement Rule # 4 You Cannot Use Enemy Tactics Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” . . .

  19. The Rules of Engagement • Rule # 4 You Cannot Use Enemy Tactics • And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” • (Matthew 20:20-28 ESV)

  20. The Rules of Engagement Rule # 1 You Cannot Blame Others Rule # 2 You Cannot Run From the Enemy Rule # 3 You Cannot Fight Alone Rule # 4 You Cannot Use Enemy Tactics Rule # 5 You Cannot Wound Civilians

  21. The Rules of Engagement Rule # 5 You Cannot Involve Civilians When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them. And they went on to another village. (Luke 9:51-56 ESV)
