  1. Lesson 7.1 Ratio and Proportion In 2000, NomarGarciaparra of the Boston Red Sox won the American League batting title for the second straight year, with a batting average of .372. He was at bat 529 times and had 197 hits. A baseball player’s batting average is calculated using a ratio. Pages 357 - 360

  2. NomarGarciaparra Hits 197 Times at bat 529 A ratio is a comparison of two numbers using division. (the denominator cannot be zero) Player 1 – Player 2 – Player 3 – Best average = 0.372

  3. Ratios A ratio of a to b can be written in three ways: a b a:b a to b Simplify the ratio. • 60 cm:200 cm 2. 3 ft 18 in

  4. Use Ratios In the diagram, AB:BC is 4:1 and AC = 30. Find AB and BC. A B C A B C

  5. Use Ratios The perimeter of a rectangle is 80 ft. The ratio of the length to the width is 7:3. Find the length and width of the rectangle.

  6. Setting 2 ratios equal to one another creates a “Proportion”. A C B D • The numbers A and D are called the extremes • The numbers B and C are called the means. • You can solve a proportion by using the cross produce property Cross Product Property “In a proportion, the product of the means is equal to the product of the extremes.”

  7. Solve each Proportion • y+2 3 6 • 6 X 8

  8. Assignment: Pages 361 – 363 #3-12 all, #18 – 44 even #46 Bonus
