  2. STEP 1Waiver of Rights This form must be completed once by all students wishing to send transcripts or letters of recommendations to college.

  3. Complete and return to Student Services before you invite teachers on Naviance!

  4. STEP 2Counselor Input Form Complete the Counselor Input Form This information provides valuable information for counselors to write your letter of recommendation.

  5. Please answer with great DETAIL!!

  6. STEP 3Transcript Request Form Submit Transcript Request Form The Transcript request form must be submitted 20 days prior to your FIRST college deadline. The deadline is October 3rdfor the November 1 deadline!

  7. Transcript Request Form Return to Student Services with $4 per transcript!

  8. STEP 4Ask Teachers for Letters Personally Ask Two Teachers to Write your Letter of Recommendation **It is imperative that you ask the teachers face to face or send them an email requesting this.

  9. STEP 5Teacher Information Form When the teachers agree to write your letter, complete the teacher information form.

  12. INVITING TEACHERS ON NAVIANCE Colleges tab  Colleges I’m Applying To  Under “Teacher Recommendations” click in “add/cancel requests”  Use the drop down menu to select teacher(s)  Click “Update Requests” button to finalize requests

  13. STEP 7Teacher Request Form Submit Teacher Request Form The Teacher request form must be submitted 20 days prior to your FIRST college deadline. The deadline is October 3rdfor the November 1 deadline!

  15. STEP 7Parent Input Form Help your parents access their Naviance Account. Once they log on, have them complete the Parent Input Page.

  16. STEP 8Visit Colleges Visit Prospective Colleges We recommend visiting all schools for which you plan to submit an application at least one time!

  17. STEP 9Register and Send SAT/ACT Scores Register for a Fall SAT and/or ACT Send your SAT/ACT scores directly from Collegeboard and/or ACT.

  18. STEP 10Common Application Create a Common App Account

  19. Common Application can be sent to over 450 schools.

CREATING A LIST 1-2 Wish schools • A school where you fall below the average GPA and SAT Scores. 3-5 50/50 schools • Schools that you meet the GPA and SAT averages. 1-2 Comfortable Schools • Schools where you are clearly above the average GPA and SAT’s. BE OPEN MINDED AND REALISTIC A SAFE SCHOOL NEEDS TO BE FINANCIALLY SAFE AS WELL

ADMISSION DECISIONS • Early Decision:Early deadline, early response, BINDING • Early ActionEarly deadline, early response, NON-BINDING • Priority DeadlineStudents apply by an earlier deadline, and receive priority over students who do not meet the deadline. • Single Choice Early Action or Restrictive Early ActionThis is the same as early action, but the colleges that use this form will restrict your ability to apply early action or early decision to other colleges • Rolling AdmissionsStudents are accepted/denied as applications are received • Regular AdmissionApply by regular deadline (usually Jan 15) and hear a response by April 1

UPCOMING DATES September 10-26: Counselors meet individual with every senior to discuss post- high school planning October 3: Deadline to request teacher recommendations for November 1 college deadline October 3: Deadline to request counselor recommendations for November 1 college deadline. September 12-19: Counselors visit Senior English classes October 15: PSAT Day and mini college workshops for seniors November 1: Deadline for UMCP, UMBC, JMU, and most early action decisions December 1: Deadline for Towson

HELPFUL HINTS • Colleges look at your applications as a whole package. • Use different parts of application to highlight different parts of yourself, ie teacher rec, counselor rec, personal essay, short answers • Meet all deadlines. • Utilize all your resources. • Counselors, teachers, parents, friends, workshops at school, admissions counselors, financial aid counselors • Be realistic when making your list. • Check our Student Services website for scholarships, college information, SAT/ACT.

  30. CLOSING THOUGHTS 1. Don’t take it personally. 2. Visit your prospective campuses. (Again.) 3. Make the most of your choice. 4. If money is an issue, see your counselor. There are lots of ways to access college and many scholarship and grant programs available. 5.
