  1. What is Prop 75? “Prohibits public employee labor organizations from using dues or fees for political contributions unless the employee provides prior consent each year on a specified written form…” Excerpt from official ballot statement from California Secretary of State

  2. Prop 75 this fall, then…pension privatization next year! • “… our pension proposal will go to the ballot in June 2006.” Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (April 7, 2005) • Assemblymember Keith Richman secretly introduces ACA 23 at midnight on the last night of the legislative session to force pension change to the June 2006 ballot (September 8, 2005) • “…union bosses have too much power.” Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announces his support for Proposition 75 at Republican state convention (September 17, 2005)

  3. What’s wrong with Prop 75? • Prop 75 is really a two step attack on our pensions, health benefits and prevailing wages • Prop 75 is unnecessary: we can already opt out of paying dues for political purposes • Prop 75 is an unfair effort to hinder only union and association employees by raising costs and red tape while allowing corporations to spend unlimited amounts

  4. Business outspends labor Based on data released by the FEC, and taken from www.opensecrets.org

  5. What we have to do:Educate/Motivate! • Make sure your co-workers, family and friends all know how important it is to keep our ability to fight back! • Remind everyone to vote by Election Day(remember, because of absentee voting, election day is more than just one day!) • Vote by Mail: • Worksite “parties,” visits, flyers, precinct walks • Phone reminders • Turnout at polling places
