  5. Sustain-A-Bowl • Competition between residence halls. • For 4 weeks in February 2010. • Which hall can reduce resource use the most?  Water  Electricity  Waste vs. Recycling

Sustain-A-Bowl 2009 • Twenty-two residence halls in the Quad and the Hill competed in Sustain-A-Bowl '09. • All 22 residence halls achieved reductions in their water and electricity use, and increased their recycling versus trash. • Water reductions ranged between 1.5% and 31%. • Electricity reductions ranged between 2.5% and 26%. • The calculated savings for February 2009 for all 22 residence halls was $5506 for electricity and $2785 for water. • Total savings = $8,291.

Winners: Sasnett Hall • The winning residence hall is Sasnett Hall with 710 out of 1000 possible points. • Sasnett Hall reduced their energy use by 20%. • Sasnett reduced their water use by 25%. • Sasnett participated in Movie Night (60 points) and Trivia Night (90 points). • The team from Sasnett Hall won Trivia Night.

  9. Residence Life Staff Motivation—Talking with students, bulletin boards, Facebook, website. Education—Provide information and tips on reducing electricity and gas. Participation—Lead by example. Reduce YOUR use and participate in the events.

  11. Education Electricity Reduction • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). Each one is like a 60% off coupon for your lighting. • Turn off lights whenever you leave a room even if you are only leaving for a few minutes. • Turn off your computers when you are not using them. • Put your game system to sleep too. Xbox 360's have a power-down option. Water Reduction • Take shorter showers. • Don’t leave the tap running when brushing your teeth. Waste Reduction • Buy less stuff. • BYOB—Bring your own bag. • Buy quality durable goods when you can, instead of disposable.

  15. How is it measured? • Electricity meter read once at beginning and then at the end of every week. • Water meter read once at beginning and at the end of every week. • Waste and recycling measured at random times before collection. • Measured against average use.
