  11. Interconnecting VoIP on TANet

  12. Where Do You Enable VoIP • End User – End User • Video Phone – Video Phone • Audio Phone – Audio Phone • PC – PC • PCA • X-Lite • MSN Messenger(?) • Windows Messenger supports SIP, but MSN Messenger won’t support SIP until 2006. • PBX – PBX

  13. What Are Possible Issues • Qualification of End Terminals • H.323 vs. SIP • NAT & Firewall • E2E QoS • Indecent Contents & Lawful Interception • Cost Saving(?) • What would be the next service beyond voice • Video • Presence and Instant Message • Data Conference

  14. Hey, VoIP is not working right! No other complaints Everything is OK Talk to the other guys I can talk with others Not our problem LAN Administrator System Administrator System Administrator LAN Administrator Campus Networking Campus Networking Backbone Gigapop Gigapop The server Is working OK Looks fine All the lights are green We don’t see anything wrong The network is lightly loaded E2E Problems End User End User How do you solve a problem along a path? Everyone says it is working fine! Source: “End to End Performance Initiative”, Eric Boyd

  15. Numbering Plan • SIP URI • sip:chuang@mail.moe.gov.tw • E.164 Number • Allocate new range of phone numbers from DGT • 0944020678 • Scarce resource • Re-use organization phone numbers • +886-3-5712121-31924 • 4.2.9.1.3.1.2.1.2.1.7.5.3.6.8.8.e164.arpa. 16. Task Force Working Items • Service Trial on Different Models • Consistent Numbering Plan • Deployment Scenario • Common Template of Equipment Spec • Interoperability Testing Facility • Knowledge Dissemination • Mailing List + Archives + Search Engine • Workshop • Tutorial

  17. TANet IP Telephony eXchange • Goal • As the logical topology of Routing each RNC will configure its “default route” to the eXchange. You don’t need to test the signaling between every pairs of proxy servers among all RNCs. • Schedule • Build four distant IPT eXchange in two year inside Taiwan, for fault-tolerance consideration. • 2006.1-6 Plan for the architecture, protocol and equipment requirement of IPT eXchange • 2006.7-2007.6 Set up the ITPSC in Southern Taiwan and Central Taiwan • 2007.1-6 Review the operations of IPTSC, and plan for the reamining two IPTSCs • 2007.7-12 All four IPTSCs are set up. • Expected Benefits • Reduce the SIP interoperability testing among RNCs. • Consolidate TANet Numbering Plan • Set up a fault-tolerant IPTSC system

  18. Operations of IPTSC • Goal • Daily operations & Help Desk • Statistics and CDR (Call Detail Record) • Develop common services required for inter-region calls (e.g. 411 directory service) • Schedule • 2006.7-2006.12 • Expected Benefits • Support the Numbering Plan planned by TANet for inter-regional and international VoIP call setup • Statistics of inter-system VoIP calls • Creation of common services

  19. Equipment Testing Center • Goal • Build a testing center and provides testing equipment to help each RNC verifying the functions and interoperability of equipment before the procurement. • Schedule • 2006.6-2006.12 • Expected Benefits • The SIP phones can call servers come from different vendors. This testing center will facilitate the interoperability between systems among different RNCs. • Engineers in many RNCs are still unfamiliar with VoIP equipment. The experience accumulated in this center will be helpful to reduce the time needed for trial-and-error. • Create an automatic testing flow to save the time and manpower for equipment testing which is now executed by engineers manually.

  20. Project 1: APAN SIP Server • Taiwan Academic Network would like to volunteer to host the APAN SIP Server • Two hosts will be allocated • Fault-Tolerance Consideration • Help Desk Service in NOC • Manpower in NOC is allocated to constatntly monitor the status of the server • Statistics of Call Processing • Rules for Call Routing • Static • Dynamic (TRIP)
