  2. 1950’s • June and Ward Cleaver were one of those nice, middle-class couples

  3. 1970’s • Middle America--Columbus, Ohio--where one-time flower children Elyse and Steve Keaton still espoused the liberal values of the idealistic '60s, although they were now parents and professionals (she an architect, he the manager of public TV station WKS-TV). 

  4. Late 1970’s • Alice – • Single mother

  6. Family & Consumer Sciences • Contributing Factors • Shifts in Society and Economics • Reforms in Education • Evolutions in Family and Consumer Sciences itself • The Simpson’s • 1990’s – Present

  7. VISION of FCS Family and consumer sciences education empowers individuals and families across the life span to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse global society. Our unique focus is on families, work and their interrelationships. (NASAFACS, 1998)

  8. Change • Complex process, not an event • Individuals personalize change and react individually • Individuals must participate and take ownership to implement innovation • Change takes place only with sufficient time and support for implementation

FCS Changes • Past 50 year decline in Stay at home wives and mothers • Married women with jobs has tripled since 1950 • Dual Earner Couple the NORM • Single Parent Family is the fastest growing family form • Increased Single Parent required to work – 1996 Welfare Reform • Elders helping raise their grandchildren • “Sandwich Generation” Take care of parents and own children

Career Changes FCS • A move from Mass Production with low-skill needs to Flexible Production with more sophisticated skill demands • Individual jobs less secure • Increased need for Lifelong Learning • Technological advances are changing • How, when and where work can be done • Creating a safer living environment • Sometimes less healthy living environment
