Place Value. Thousands, Ten Thousands, and Hundred Thousands. Lets Review the place value positions you should already be familiar with: Ones, Tens, and Hundreds. Now, lets take a look at the next three place value positions. First we have the Thousands position.

  1. Place Value Thousands, Ten Thousands, and Hundred Thousands

  2. Lets Review the place value positions you should already be familiar with: Ones, Tens, and Hundreds. Now, lets take a look at the next three place value positions. First we have the Thousands position. Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones 1,000 100 10 1 , Comma We would need 10 hundred slabs to equal 1 Thousands cube 10 hundreds = 1 Thousands We use a comma to separate groups of 3 numbers!

  3. Ten Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones , Next is the TENTHOUSANDS position. 10,000 1,000 100 10 1 Again we go in groups of 10… 10 thousands = 1 Ten Thousands

Hundred Thousands Ten Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones , Finally, there is the HUNDREDTHOUSANDS position. 100,000 10,000 1,000 100 10 1 Again we go in increments of 10… 10 ten thousands = 1 Hundred Thousands How many thousands would it take to equal 100,000? _________ thousands = 1 Hundred Thousands

  5. Hundred Thousands Ten Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones , I have the number 392,754 How would I read that? Let’s chunk it! 392,754 Three hundred ninety-two thousand seven hundred fifty-four And I would write it like this… 300,000 90,000 2,000 700 50 4

  6. Decimal Place Value Tenths, Hundredths, Thousandths

  7. Now lets look at the first three place values after the decimal point. First we have the Tenths position. Ones Tenths 1 .1 . Decimal Point If we divided 1 unit into 10 equal pieces we create tenths. 10 tenths = 1 ones All decimal place values end in “ths”.

  8. Next comes the Hundredths position. Ones Tenths Hundredths 1 .01 .1 . Decimal Point

  9. Finally, the Thousandthsposition. Ones Tenths Hundredths Thousandths 1 .01 .001 .1 . Decimal Point

  10. 45.798 How would I read that? Forty-five AND seven hundred ninety-eight thousandths And I would write it like this: Ones Tenths Hundredths Thousandths Tens .09 .008 40 .7 5 .

  12. Populations are the amount of people in an area. We need to understand place value to understand populations. Come circle the number in the TENS position. What is the value of that number? 80

  13. Circle the number in the THOUSANDS position. What is the value of that number? 4,000

  14. Circle the number in the TEN THOUSANDS position What is the value of that number? 40,000
