  3. Cigarette Smoking • Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the United States • Cigarette smoking is the most common form of tobacco consumption. Because of the curing process, the smoke is relatively mild, unlike cigar, roll-your-own or pipe tobacco. Cigarettes also contain a number of additives, particularly to enhance taste.

  4. Who Smokes? Lets talk about numbers! • 46.2 million US adults were current smokers in 2001 • Almost 27% of those 18 to 24 years old were current smokers. • Nationwide, 22.9% of high school students were current smokers in 2002. White and Hispanic students were among the highest in terms of cigarette use.

  6. Smokeless Tobacco • What is smokeless tobacco? • Smokeless tobacco commonly comes in 2 basic forms, snuff and chewing tobacco. In addition to these, several other forms of smokeless tobacco have also been introduced. • You place the “chew” between your lips and gums in the mouth.

  7. Health Effects of Chewing Tobacco! • Smokeless tobacco products are not a safe substitute for tobacco smoking. Harmful health effects include: • oral (mouth) cancer  • pancreatic cancer  • addiction to nicotine  • leukoplakia • receding gums • bone loss around the roots of the teeth  • abrasion of teeth  • staining of teeth  • bad breath

  9. How do the risks of using smokeless tobacco compare to smoking cigatettes? • Smokeless tobacco products are less lethal than cigarettes. However, these products have not been proven to be effective in helping smokers quit. Smokers who delay quitting by using smokeless products between cigarettes greatly increase their risk of lung cancer. They also set themselves up for new health problems caused by smokeless tobacco.
