Nowadays the authority of the Bible is under attack on many different sides • One of these attacks states that God’s Word, the Bible has to be augmented by extra-Biblical sources of truth, e.g. • E.G.White (Seventh Day Adventism) • Book of Mormon • Charismatic visions and revelations • Tradition of any kind • Science (theistic evolutionism) What is sola scriptura

A hierarchy of authorities exists to discern truth: philosophy, science, etc. these are all man-made Sola Scriptura states that the Scripture is the sole highest authority in determining truth, and not the Bible plus tradition, science, or anything else Bottom line: If we find anything to contradict the Bible, then we know that it must be wrong Sola scriptura

The Bible is the sole highest authority when it comes to defining any kind of truth, not just dogma and morals (see Methodist church) The Bible + something =/= God’s Word Different from Solo Scriptura which says that we can use only the Bible to decide what is right or wrong Sola scriptura – solo scriptura

Revealed truth originated as a corpus of knowledge from the mind of God before time • Independent of interpretation or any human authority which claims to interpret it • Revealed truth stands alone and not embedded into any kind of tradition • Man’s opinion is not on the same level as God’s word • God is not brought down to man’s level • Man shall not exalt himself to God’s level Revealed truth as a corpus of knowledge

If the Scriptures are the sole highest authority, you can say this of every single verse in the Bible • The Reformers also taught a principle called “Tota Scriptura”, in other words, the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation is authoritative • Hence, the whole Bible is the sole highest authority, you can’t just choose and select • (liberalism ~ God’s Word is somewhere in the Bible) Tota scriptura

Jesus and the disciples always proved things from the Scriptures (Lk. 24:27; Acts 18:28) Luke: “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” Acts: “For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, shewingby the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.” Where does the bible mention sola scriptura?

  12. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” The Scriptures are profitable; if profitable, then sufficient; if sufficient, it is unnecessary to augment it with anything else. 2Tim 3:16-17 – the bible is sufficient

Furthermore, they purport that only the Roman Catholic hierarchy is capable of infallibly interpreting the Bible, ex cathedra Roman Catholic tradition

The Bible mentions Jesus as the rock dozens of times (Psalm 18:2, 31; Psalm 118:8; Mt. 7:24-25; Mt. 21:42; Eph. 2:19-22; Acts 4:11-12; 1Cor. 10:4; 1Pt. 1:4-6) In Greek the word for rock is πέτρα, or pétra, a large rock, and is feminine, but Peter’s name means Πέτρος, or petros, which is masculine The passage does not say “upon you I will build my church” or “you and your successors” If the church was built upon Peter, then the church would end with Peter’s death – clearly it means something else The rock

But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.” Was Jesus literally talking to Peter here then?!   23. “In a passage in this book, I said about the Apostle Peter: 'On him as on a rock the Church was built.'...But I know that very frequently at a later time, I so explained what the Lord said: 'Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church,' that it be understood as built upon Him whom Peter confessed saying: 'Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God,' and so Peter, called after this rock, represented the person of the Church which is built upon this rock, and has received 'the keys of the kingdom of heaven.' For, 'Thou art Peter' and not 'Thou art the rock' was said to him. But 'the rock was Christ,' in confessing whom, as also the whole Church confesses, Simon was called Peter.
