  1. The Role of the Citizen in Government Different governments have their own view of the citizen’s role in the political process—the process through which decisions about government are made.

  2. Monarchy/Absolute Monarchy • In an absolute monarchy, ruler’s will is supreme, the ruler still depends on the cooperation of his or her subjects. • Nobility-higher social class based on wealth- formed councils that advised the ruler. • Judges, officers in the army, treasurers • Commoners express their views in petition to monarch

  3. Constitutional Monarchy • Citizens have assemblies that govern the country. • House of Lords and House of Commons govern the England. • Monarch does not have complete power.

  4. Democracy • Political process based on civic participation. • Citizens stay informed on issues • Write their representatives • Join political parties • Run for political office • Vote in elections • Serve in government • Can criticize government policy and form opposing political parties • Majority of citizens vote directly or elect officials to determine what government does • Civic participation begins with education!

Dictatorship • Modern dictators have absolute power • Still depend on the support of majority of people to do so • Rules with the help of a political party and military • Allows only one political party, that is controlled by dictator • Citizens only participate in support of the dictator • Opponents no way to participate, protestors are severely punished • Actions are taken against political opponents or military leaders who appear to be disloyal

Communism • Government owns all property and dominates all aspects of life in country • Leaders are not elected by citizens but by Communist party or Communist leader • Citizens often have restricted rights and few freedoms • Communism and dictatorships are similar in the role citizens play in government

  9. Why do governments that restrict people’s freedoms still exist today? Do these governments offer any advantages or disadvantages to the people living under them?
