Post-Modernism • Post-Modernism unofficially begins at the end of WWII • Authors who thought the worst that could happen did happen in “The Great War” are surprised to find, or not surprised depending on who you ask, that the world looks like it is trying to tear itself apart • Horrors of nuclear war and the holocaust • Fears of Nationalism and its consequences (Fascism, Communism, Nazism) • American writers also feel an exacerbation of racial tension

Post-Modernism • Writers respond by further doubting truths of the past • Writers move their beliefs toward worlds without certainty and defined rules- Follows the path of emerging science (Particle/Wave Duality, Flexibility of time) Even now the speed of light may be broken • Writers no longer feel limited by structure of any kind (i.e. House of Leaves, Crying of Lot 49, Grasshopper)

Modernism Post-Modernism Rejection of totalizing theories Disunity, reasons for separation Cynicism of science, anti-technology Multiple conflicting identities Many types of possible family arrangements Loss of Central control and subversion of order • Belief in “Grand Theory” • Belief in unifying values • Master Narrative can progress through science • Sense of centered self • Nuclear family is the center social order • Social Hierarchy

Modernism Post-Modernism The artificial seems more real than original Dawn of androgynous and homosexual characters Ability to navigate info; the internet Blending of various art forms Cyborgian mixing of organic and inorganic Recycling past literary trends in new ways Reduction of the value of the mass produced • Faith in the “Real” and authenticity • Clear Distinction of sexual identities • Knowledge mastery, encyclopedia • Sense of boundaries within art • Vehement boundaries between man and machine • Cutting away from past forms of artistic expression • Mass reproduction and consumerism
