The call for other universities to do same has received mixed response. Some lecturers consider it an unnecessary increase in the workload of students. This experience is similar to that in many other countries. METHODS: A structured questionnaire was administer to 109 final year students of the University of Calabar. The question were designed to elicit the respondents’ bio data and information about their perceived benefits of a posting in family medicine and choice of specialization among others. RESULTS: Ninety-nine questionnaires were successfully returned. Sixty respondents were males while 39 were females. The peak age group was 25-29yrs (75.8%). Most of the students (47.5%) first learnt of the specialty of Family Medicine from their teachers. All the students found the posting beneficial and desirable. Family Medicine ranked 4th among the students’ choice of discipline for specialization. Thirty two percent of the students recommended 8 weeks posting in Family Medicine.
