  3. Brief History • Founded in 1638, Hartford Public High School has a rich heritage that extends over four centuries. • HPHS is a comprehensive high school, offering a program of studies that caters to the needs and interests of its students .

  22. Smaller Learning Communities Hartford High is organized into four Smaller Learning Communities. • Technology Academy • International Academy • Law and Public Service Academy • Careers and Entrepreneurship Academy Students choose which academy they wish to join.

  23. Course Electives • A generous offering of electives supports the core courses required for graduation, while providing all students the opportunity to explore new ideas and areas of knowledge.

  34. Careers and Entrepreneurship Academy • The Careers and Entrepreneurship Academy focuses on required core subject areas and looks at three strands for career exploration.  • These include Fashion and Retail, Food Service and Hospitality, and Education and Social Services.

International Academy • The International Academy at Hartford Public High School is a smaller learning community for students in grades 9 through 12. • This academy provides both English-proficient students and bilingual students with an education that focuses on international culture, arts, and languages, which are important for understanding the global society.

  38. Law and Public Service Academy • The mission of the Law and Public Service Academy is to prepare students for the academic challenges of college and careers in law, public service, and police and fire academies.

Technology Academy • The Technology Academy at Hartford Public High School is a smaller learning community for students in grades 9 through 12. • This academy provides education and preparation for careers in: • Information Technology • Graphics and Multimedia • Manufacturing • Engineering Design

  41. Graduating Requirements • Students’ need twenty-one (21) credits to graduate. • These include: • English - 4 units • Mathematics - 3 units • Social Studies - 3 units • Science - 3 units • Physical Education - 2 units • Electives - 6 units • Service Learning - 15 hours per year

  42. What is Bellwork? • Bellwork is a quick writing assignment to be completed at the beginning of each class. • It helps improve writing skills. • It helps students prepare for the CAPT. • It helps students get ready and focused for class.
