Basics of the CPGTSP • Training – increase gambling-problem related knowledge and treatment skills; provide information on the CPGTSP system • Services – multi-modal, stepped-care treatment network that encompasses a continuum of integrated services, including harm reduction and abstinence based alternatives that will deliver a broad spectrum of evidence-based treatments to California residents • Research – develop and evaluate treatment approaches for gambling problems; improve evidence-base for gambling-problem treatment

  7. Training • 4-day gambling-problem specific training program delivered by leaders in the field • Training program delivered at no cost to participants • Delivered at multiple locations throughout major regions of California • Designed to provide a basic foundation for treatment providers

  8. Training • Over 300 individuals from around the State of California have been trained to date. • Degrees represented among those trained • PsyD/ PhD 40 • MFT 179 • LCSW 40 • Languages: 33 spoken including English

Training • Trainings included an evaluation component • Data on first seven trainings is available • Los Angeles (10/21/09 to 10/24/09) • San Francisco (11/18/09 to 11/21/09) • Sacramento (12/16/09 to 12/19/09) • San Diego (1/20/10 to 1/23/09) • Long Beach (04/21/10 to 04/24/10) • Riverside (05/19/10 to 05/22/10 • San Francisco (06/23/10 to 06/26/10)

Services • Brief Interventions: BDA and NICOS, telephone-based, using “Freedom from Problem Gambling” Workbook • Outpatient: Diverse pool of community providers trained, First outpatient providers became active in February of 2011. • Intensive Outpatient: Located at Beit T’Shuvah, in operation • Residential: Located at Beit T’Shuvah, in operation

IOP Programming • Individual Therapy – Individualized treatment plan. • GR group – RP (triggers, urges & cravings, lapse vs. relapse, etc.), stress management, emotions management, some process work. • Activity Group – psycho-education, gambling and the family, financial planning, creating a relapse prevention plan, etc.

Services • Universal Reporting Forms • The UGSP developed a set of forms for use in the CPGTSP across all levels of service • Forms cover a wide range of domains due to the complex impacts of gambling problems • Forms provide some uniformity of data collection across sites and timeframes, making quality assurance efforts possible • Data Management System

Research • Establishing Best Treatment Practices for Pathological Gambling • Examining the effectiveness of a 6-session, manualized, CBT-based intervention for PG • Two groups: (a) manualized treatment; (b) TAU • Treatments delivered by licensed Clinical Psychologists • Participants recruited from the community • Baseline, in treatment, end of treatment, long-term follow-up.

  18. Research • EBTP Progress • 44 participants enrolled • Mean Age = 43.7 years • Gender = 60.4% Male; 31.3% Female • API = 19%; Black = 16.7%; Hispanic = 10.4%; White = 39.6%; Other = 6.3% • Mean Years Education = 15.0 • Median Income = 25K to 36K

Training • Ongoing trainings • CPGTSP Supervision Network: Serves as a clinical resource for authorized CPGTSP treatment providers • Development of web-based video content: Video interview segments with leading researchers and clinicians providing information on pathological gambling etiology, diagnosis, and treatment

  24. Research • Evaluating Best Treatment Practices for Pathological Gambling • Targeted recruitment is 120 persons (60 in each arm) • Conduct follow-up interviews • Preliminary data analysis • Examine range of outcomes for participants

Research • Manual for Treatment for Significant Others (SO) • Development of a treatment manual for counselors working with SO • Content based on empirically supported interventions and suggestions from focus groups • Examples of module content includes Stress Management, Differentiation of the Self, Boundaries, Finances, Conflict Resolution, Trust & Forgiveness • Online video “webisodes” that accompany modules to enhance learning, psycho-education • Currently being tested for efficacy in a clinical trial with significant others at UCLA
