A sustainable Army simultaneously meets current as well as future mission requirements worldwide, safeguards human health, improves quality of life and enhances the natural environment. Why is it important? It is our obligation to ensure that our Soldiers today - and the Soldiers of the future – have: The land, water, and air resources they need to train A healthy environment in which to live The support of local communities, government officials, and the American people What we must strive for: Sustainability, fully integrated into the installation strategic planning process/model, to ensure Long-term viability and mission integrity Reduction of environmental impacts Realistic training environments Minimized resource requirements Robust and sustainable infrastructure Strong military and civilian community Partnerships Enhanced well-being Sustainability Triple Bottom Line of Sustainability 

The personal – physical, material, mental, and spiritual – state of Soldiers, retirees, veterans, civilians, and their families that contributes to their preparedness to perform and support the Army’s mission Why is it important? Army well-being is inextricably linked to four key institutional outcomes: Performance Readiness Retention Recruiting What we must strive for: Implement a comprehensive strategy that integrates well-being initiatives, programs, and resources to meet the well-being needs of The Army. Provide a competitive standard of living for all Soldiers, civilians, and their families. Provide a unique culture, sense of community, and a record of accomplishment that engenders intense pride and sense of belonging amongst Soldiers, civilians, and their families. Provide an environment that allows Soldiers, civilians, and their families to enrich their personal life by achieving their individual aspirations. Ensure leadership that maximizes the positive, combined effect of intangibles on the outcomes of well-being programs and the integrity of the institutional strength of The Army.
