  1. Sisyphus & Loaves and Fishes By: Raina Williams and Eliza Angel

  2. The History Of Sisyphus • In Greek Mythology, Sisyphus was a king who offended Zeus. His punishment was to spend eternity in Hades rolling a giant boulder up a hill. Each time the boulder neared the top, it would roll back down to the bottom, and Sisyphus had to start his task over.

  3. Today’s meaning • A seemingly endless, or perhaps futile task can be referred to as a “labor of Sisyphus” or as “Sisyphean.” • A hopeless task where a man’s or woman’s job is never done. • The task can NEVER be completed no matter how much or how long you try to complete it.

  4. Examples • My mother did not buy my argument that making my bed each morning was basically a labor of Sisyphus since the bed was only going to be unmade again each evening-and that therefore I should not be expected to do it . • After the firefighter put out 6 house fires, he started to go home , when he received another call about a forest fire. He felt that his job was like a Sisyphus task. • The high school maintenance man felt like Sisyphus as he watched his newly mopped hallway be covered in mud footprints from the football team .

  5. The Story Of Loaves and Fishes • In several of the gospels, the story is told of Jesus preaching to a crowd of thousands. When the people became hungry, all the food to be found was five loaves and two fish. Jesus had these brought to him and blessed the food. His disciples distributed bread and fish to the entire crowd, and there was still food left over after everyone had been fed.

  6. The meaning of today • The phrase “loaves and fishes” refers to an almost miraculous abundance in the face of seeming scarcity. • In a time of need someone was there to give hope or offer help. • There is always hope no matter what situation you are in.

  7. Examples • When I think back to my struggling student days with my extremely tight budget, I realize that the fact that I didn’t starve is a real case of loaves and fishes. • During the drought, the people of Africa experienced the true story of loaves and fishes when the U.S shipped over 1,000 crates of canned food to help them survive this difficult time.
