What is “living with divine oneness”?

Unifying the Source (Tawhid)

Witnessing/seeing the One in every thing…

Teaching of the messengers of the One

Saying of Muhammad (p):

“Oh Lord, show us things as they are.”

“How long will you be attached with the shape of the jug?

Leave aside the jug’s shape:

Go, seek water!”

- Rumi

“Day and night, the Sea keeps on churning the foam.

You behold the foam but not the Sea – how strange!”

- Rumi

And in the Earth are signs for

those who comprehend.

And within yourselves;

do you not see

- Quran, 51:20-21

What do we see/witness?

  • Living with divine oneness, we see/witness:

    • Not healers, only the One

    • Not sustainers, only the One

    • Not powerful sources, only the One

    • Not compassionate sources, only the One

  • By observing the universe and ourselves, we witness:

    • Not deities, only the One.

      • The motto of divine oneness…

      • negation/affirmation

Superficial belief of divine oneness

We say:

“Almighty God is One, He has no partner or like. This universe is His.”

Living with Divine Oneness

To see the attributes of the One in every thing.

To open a window directly onto His light from every thing.

To attain to perpetual awareness of the Divine presence.

Saying of Muhammad (p):

“The best thing I and the messengers before me have said is:

not deities, only One God.”

Two ways to experience life
Two Ways to Experience Life

The choice is ours:

Reality or Illusion

Abu Hurayra reported that Muhammad (p), said, “God says:

I asked you for food and you did not feed Me.

He (His servant) will say:

Lord, how could I feed You when You did not ask me for food and You are the Lord of the universe?

God will say:

Do you not know that My servant so-and-so asked you for food and you did not feed him?

Do you not know that if you had fed him, you would have found Me there?

Son of Adam, I asked you for water and you did not give Me water.

The servant will reply:

O Lord, how could I give you water when You are the Lord of the universe?

He will say:

My servant so-and-so asked you for water and you did not give him water.

Do you not know that if you had given him water, you would have found Me there?

Son of Adam:

I was sick and you did not visit Me.

He will say:

O Lord, how could I visit You when You are the Lord of the universe?

He will say:

Do you not know that My servant so-and-so was sick.

If you had visited him you would have found Me there.

(Muslim Hadith Collection)

“Dear One, look at the Painter!

Why do you stare at the pictures on the wall?”

“The picture derives its movement only from the Painter’s bush”

- Rumi, Divan

How do we get there?

By contemplation

By contemplating the universe and ourselves with the guidance of divine

Withdraw the heart into the arena of contemplation, nothing helps the heart more than that!

-SidiIbnAta’illah of Alexandria

Pointers

Inquiry

“In the face of meaning, what is form? Very distasteful. The meaning of the heavens keep them in place.”

- Rumi

“Pass beyond form, escape from names! The meaning of the heavens keep them in place.”

Flee titles and names toward meaning.”

- Rumi
