Smart sustainable city: definition smartness + sustainability “A smart sustainable city is an innovative city that uses information and communication technologies (ICTs) and other means to improve quality of life, efficiency of urban operation and services, and competitiveness, while ensuring that it meets the needs of present and future generations with respect to economic, social and environmental aspects as well as cultural.” [UNECE/ITU]

U4SSC: overview • IDENTITY CARD • Definition: • Time: launched on18 May 2016 • Aim: facilitate the transition into smart sustainablecities • Full name: United for Smart SustainableCities Global Initiative U4SSC is a global platform for smart citiesstakeholderswhichadvocates for public policies to encourage the use of ICT to facilitate the transition to smart sustainablecities. • Place: www.itu.int/en/ITU-T/ssc/united/Pages/default.aspx

Objectives • Support to create a regulatory and institutional framework for sustainable urban development • Encourage cooperation among stakeholders • Provide practical guidance to cities seeking to become smart sustainable cities • Provide a platform to connect people and cities • Harmonize methodologies and approaches to assess cities performances • Help in achieving and monitoring the SDGs • Capacity building
