  1. JML Course Selection Timeline • Teacher Recommendations: Phone calls were made by January 13, 2012 if a level change was recommended. Otherwise all students are expected to be successful continuing on their current level of study. • Rising 7th and 8th Students completed course selections online via Naviance Family Connections at the end of January/beginning of February. All students brought home instructions for parents to view/change selections. The option for parents to change selections is available until March 1, 2012. After that all changes need to be made through grade level counselors. Course verification sheets will be given to students with 3rd quarter report cards. Rising 9th Students completed course selections online on February 2nd and 3rd. **Course changes will be honored through June 18, 2012.**

  2. 7th Grade Required Courses: Grade Level or Honors in the following: English Life Science U.S. History Math: Students currently in Math 6 will go to Math 7 (Pre-Algebra) Students currently in Accelerated Math 6/7 will go to Algebra 1 Also Required: Health and P.E. Technology Education & Family and Consumer Science (one semester of each) **All 7th graders will have 45 minutes of Resource or Spectrum**

  3. 7th Grade Elective Courses All 7th Graders will choose ONE Fine Arts Elective: • Band 7 (must have completed Band 6) • Strings 7 (must have completed Strings 6) • Chorus • Guitar 7 • Art 7 All 7th Graders will choose ONE Language Elective: Communication Studies Accelerating Literacy (recommended by school) Spanish 1, German 1, Latin 1, French 1

Required Courses-Grade 8 Grade Level or Honors for the following: • English • Civics- Government/Economics • Physical Science-Physics/Chemistry Math: Students who took Math 7 will go to Algebra 1 Students who took Algebra 1 will go to Geometry Students who took Geometry will go to Alg 2 w/Trig

  5. Required Courses-Grade 8 Continued • Health and PE 8 • Resource-all 8th graders are required to have a 90 minute Resource block every other day.** **Students who take Spectrum will have 45 minutes of Resource and 45 minutes of Spectrum**

  6. Grade 8 World Language Choices World Languages and Cultures (FKA Foreign Language) Level I or II in: Spanish German Latin French

Grade 8 Elective Choices Students who are not taking a World Language will choose TWO of the following: Band 8 (if completed Band 7) Strings 8 (if completed Strings 7) Chorus Guitar Level 1 or 2 Technology Education Family and Consumer Sciences Art 8 Students who are taking a World Language will choose ONE of these electives

TJ and AOS Timeline • LCPS Academy of Science • http://cmsweb1.lcps.org/aos/site/default.asp • September Information Session and Open House • September - The deadline for Part I of the AOS application; registration for the PSAT is included in the application. • October - PSAT administered at Dominion High School for all AOS applicants. Expunging Grades • Any high school course taken during middle school • Once expunged, the grade AND credit are gone. • Students would need to retake the course in order to receiving credit or to move onto subsequent levels. • Expungment forms will be sent home with all Rising 8th and 9th grade FINAL report cards. Forms MUST be submitted to the Counseling Deparments NO LATER than August 15, 2012: Rising 9th Graders: Submit forms to FHS Rising 8th Graders: Submit forms to JML

  14. Summer Options Two Ways to take courses in the summer: 1)LCPS Summer School Middle school summer school is for students who have failed two or more classes. Rising 7th grade students may also take Math 7 as a new course to advance to Algebra I in seventh grade. Approval by the principal and a pass advance score on the Math 6 SOL is required. High school summer school is available for: Algebra 1 and Geometry *Summer school registration information is usually available April/May.
