  2. Bone Marrow Transplant The process of Bone Marrow Transplants is like the blood transfusion procedure. The procedure involves an injection (IV) injection of allogeneic or autologous stem cells in order to restore the damaged or damaged bone marrow or the immune system

  3. Stem Cells are Collect in Two Ways • Peripheral blood ( Common method) • Bone marrow: removal (called the harvest)

  4. Blood from the peripheral blood ( Common method): The process of harvesting peripheral blood stem cells are comparable to the procedure used for platelet donation. It is often used for bone marrow transplant. It makes use of an apparatus called an apheresis machine, that removes stem cells as well as other blood cells through the process of filtration.

  5. Bone marrow(harvest) The removal (called the harvest) of the stem cells of bone marrow is carried out when you are in either epidural or general anesthesia. The harvest is accomplished with a needle that is used to continuously remove an amount of bone marrow from various places in your pelvic as well as hip bones.

  6. TYPE of BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTATION 1. Autologous Transplants 2. Allogeneic Transplants

  7. 1. Autologous Transplants The stem cells are derived from the patient's body. The stem cells are collected and extracted prior to beginning treatment with radiation or chemotherapy. After treatment the cells are taken back into the human body.

  8. 2. Allogeneic Transplants This is done by using stem cells that are taken from the body of the donor. To become a donor, you must match closely the genes of the patient which is why it's typically obtained from a parent or sibling. However there are matches in other donors through the registry for donors called MUD, which stands for Matched Unrelated Donor (MUD) transplant

  9. Risks of BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTATION • A sudden drop in blood pressure • Nausea or headaches • Breathing or breathing pain • The fever and chills

  10. These side effects tend to be short-lived, however there could be additional complications that may arise following an MB Transplant procedure. The severity of these complications can depend on various factors like health status, age, the disease, as well as the type of transplant that was performed.
