  1. Chemical Reaction Vocabulary12/4/2012 • CHEMICAL REACTION: where one or more substances break bonds and reform bonds to create NEW SUBSTANCES!

  2. Chemical Reaction Vocabulary12/4/2012 • CHEMICAL CHANGE: when one or more substances changes it’s identity (i.e. what is inside) • Ex. When you bond H and O, two reactive gases, you get H2O which is a liquid and is not reactive. • PHYSICAL CHANGE: when one or more substances changes its appearance (i.e. how it looks; you touch nothing inside) • Ex. When you melt an ice cube into liquid water, both the ice cube and liquid water are made of H2O molecules. THEY ARE THE SAME SUBSTANCE!!!

  3. Chemical Reaction Vocabulary 12/4/2012 • CHEMICAL PROPERTY:characteristic of an object that will tell you what it can do in a reaction; you will usually have to change the identity of the object to measure/observe • Ex. Reactivity, flammability • PHYSICAL PROPERTY: characteristic of an object that can be measured/observed without changing the identity of the object • Ex. Phase of matter, solubility, density, mass, etc…

  4. SIGNS OF A CHEMICAL REACTION 12/4/2012 • ENERGY EXCHANGE (ENDO OR EXOTHERMIC) • ENDOTHERMIC REACTION: • Energy is taken into the reaction • EXOTHERMIC REACTION • Energy is given out during a reaction (Think EXIT; EXO) • By ENERGY we mean for example: • Heat • Light • Sound • Electricity • GAS FORMATION

  5. Chemical Reaction Vocabulary 12/4/2012 • COLOR CHANGE • ODOR CHANGE • SOLID FORMATION (PRECIPITATE) • PRECIPITATE: • A sign of a chemical reaction in a liquid where a solid is produced • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RE-dFN7U91M AND THE BIGGEST INDICATOR: WHEN A NEW SUBSTANCE IS FORMED!!!
