  4. Race Overview July 23, 2011 marks the 87th sailing of the prestigious Bayview Mackinac Race. Known as the “Great Race on the Great Lakes,” the race has become one of the most highly publicized sailing events in the nation. With a format that caters to elite yachtsmen, the casual boater and families and summer sports lovers, the race has grown to become the world’s largest freshwater sporting event. Some 250 sailboats and over 2500 sailors participate annually in the event. Hosted by Bayview Yacht Club (BYC), the race attracts competitors and spectators from coast to coast. Thousands of family members and spectators follow the race up Lake Huron to scenic Mackinac Island.

Race Overview Mackinac Island plays host to one of the biggest summer celebrations in Michigan as finishers meet their families along the Straits of Mackinac in front of the Mission Point Resort. A Summer-Long sponsorship! The City of Port Huron prepares a week’s schedule that includes parades, special events, private V.I.P. parties, the colorful arrival of the sail boats, Boat Night and the Saturday morning send off.
