  1. Who Answers When We Call? I Kings 18:16-46

  2. Introduction It is sometimes said that a crisis never makes a man--it only reveals what he already is. Todd Beamer, September 11, 2001 didn’t change him. It only revealed what was already there on the inside. Mt Carmel overlooks present day Haifa. Baal was the god who controlled the rising and setting of the sun as well as the seasons of the year and the weather….when it rained and when it didn’t rain. The worship of Baal also appealed to the desires of the flesh Worship of Jehovah God had almost disappeared in the 10 northern tribes of Israel. After many trials God sent Elijah back to Ahab…to which Ahab responds, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel. v. 17-18

  3. A Contest Between Two gods Elijah decides its time for the truth to come out If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is god, follow him. v. 21 “If”…he makes it practical and personal “answers” …”The god who answers by fire--he is God.”v. 24

  4. Four Elements in Their Quest for an Answer There was the matter of prayer. The prophets of Baal cried out to Baal for hours. They "danced around the altar they had made" (vs 26). The priests of Baal "slashed themselves with swords and spears ... until their blood flowed" (vs 28). The priests of Baal engaged in "frantic prophesying" (vs 29).

  5. Their Quest for an Answer (cont.) Result of their praying… “there was no answer.” v.29 Elijah taunts them. v. 27 If the priests of Baal had listened they would have heard an answer….but they did not want to hear the answer.

  6. Three Elements of Elijah’s Prayer Identification: "let it be known today that you are God in Israel" (vs 36) Vindication: "let it be known ... that I am your servant" (vs 36) Explanation: “…so these people will know that you, O Lord, are God.” v.37

  7. Results of Elijah’s Prayer People Fell: The people finally wake up, their eyes are opened, they fall down and cry out, “The Lord, He is God; the Lord, He is God.” Prophets of Baal Fell: The people seize the prophets of Baal. Elijah had them brought to the Kishon Valley where they were slaughtered. Rain Fell: It starts to rain.

  8. Three Frogs Sitting on a Log “Choose you this day whom you will serve…” and the people did nothing. Three frogs are sitting on a log. Two decide to jump off. How many are left? What is it that keeps you from being a whole-hearted follower of Jesus Christ? If Jesus Christ be God, follow him! If anything else or anyone else be God, follow him! Make up your mind … stop your spiritual juggling. Run to the Cross.
