  2. BOARD WORKING Board work is the way how to manage the use of board in the classroom

  3. Using the Board well At the start of the lesson, draw a few dividing lines on the board, e.g. to form two columns and three larger working areas, like this:

  4. Use these areas to help you organize different content as you write it up, keeping different kinds of things to separate sections of the board, for example: • A vocabulary column. • A substitutions table. • A space to stick up sketch pictures • Questions for students.

  5. Here are a few more board thoughts: • Try to avoid long teacher-writing times while students are just watching and waiting. • Whenever possible, find opportunities to write things up on the board while students are working on other things, so that you are ready when they finish. • It seems natural enough to write standing in front of the board. Unfortunately, this blocks the view of what you are writing for the class and they can’t read it until you have finished.

Advice for Effective Use of the Blackboard in Class: • Outline the day's topics • Remind students about assignments • Emphasize major points of a lecture or discussion • Summarize ideas raised in class discussion as "group memory" • Present graphs, diagrams, charts, timelines • Show computations, formulas, or steps in a proof or derivation • Provide complementary or redundant representations of key ideas • Spell out new terms

  9. Tips for using Blackboard • Space the amount of Content. Don’t clutter your board too much. • Charts and tables. • Write clearly, legibly and keep the font size reasonable. Bigger is better. • Give students time to copy. Don’t erase too quickly. • Have blackboard monitors or helpers. Kids love to erase the board!

  10. Tips for Using Chalkboards • Use legible handwriting. Make sure it is large enough to be read from the back of the room. • Erase items from the board (or ask a student volunteer to help) at the end of the lesson so that a clean board will be available when needed. • Use an eraser covered with lanolin-soaked tissues as a nifty board cleaner.

  12. Tips for Using Whiteboards • Use a variety of colored markers on whiteboards. • Old white socks work well for cleaning whiteboards. • Check the view of the whiteboard at various times of the day to detect reflection from sunlight.

  13. Clean the whiteboard periodically; markings left for a long time leave a faint stain. • Avoid using light-colored pens on the whiteboard. Red often doesn’t show well from the back of the room.
