It is our goal to educate the citizens of Fayetteville and bring awareness to the importance of community participation in the effort to reduce crime. Don't hesitate to call the police to report ANY suspicious activities, persons or vehicles. FPD officers cannot be everywhere, and we count on good people to be our "eyes and ears" and report suspicious activities as they are occurring. Do your part by taking preventive action and spreading the word. You can make a difference. Please remember: Do NOT confront anyone. Your life is precious; property can be replaced! BE ALERT, BE AWARE, and be prepared to BE A GOOD WITNESS We need your help!
Suspicious activity can refer to incidents, events, individuals or circumstances that seem unusual or out of place. Remember: A quick and accurate description of events, vehicles, and persons can make all the difference in apprehending a potential criminal. Any type of activity or circumstance that seems unusual should be reported. What do you consider suspicious??
If an incident, individual, vehicle or circumstance seems out of place or unusual or makes you feel uncomfortable, do not hesitate to call the police and report it. Let law enforcement make the decision on what response to take. Your responsibility as a concerned citizen is to help the police help you. Reporting Suspicious Activities
Provide the address where the incident is occurring • Cross streets and/or landmarks may be used if you are unsure of the physical address • Get as close to the address as possible in the event the call is disconnected Location – Why it’s important
New “flip card” type system • When enough information is provided to safely send a unit to the scene another telecommunicator dispatches the call. • Calls are dispatched by priority; 1-5 with 1 being the highest • Priority calls are automatically assigned and the system “stacks” the calls. • Examples of priority 1 & 2 calls are in progress calls such as robberies, shootings, or vehicle accidents with injuries. • Calls are not held. Secure your home for the Holidays • Install bright outdoor lighting, preferably with motion detection to increase witness potential. • If leaving for vacation, put a stop to mail and newspaper deliveries so it doesn’t pile up. • If you have an alarm system, USE IT! Post warning signs or window decals on your property. • Don’t leave presents under the tree! Wrap empty boxes and hide the gifts instead. • Be aware of your surroundings when you come home from shopping. • Don’t leave boxes of newly purchased items on the curb. • Always lock your doors and windows and keep garage doors closed. • Consider investing in high-security locks, solid entry doors, and laminated windows.
Secure all foundation openings and crawl spaces with hasps and padlocks. • Consider surrounding air conditioning units with heavy-duty material that is bolted to the ground in concrete and also secured to the building. • Remove privacy fencing and large shrubbery from around the air conditioning unit. • Illuminate the air conditioning unit with motion censored lighting. • Consider alarming the air conditioning unit. • Install security cameras in the area of the unit. • Remove air conditioning units from vacant properties. This multi agency task force will address residential burglaries and other associated crimes. • In an 18 month period, there were over 5400 break-ins and larcenies citywide. • Over 1200 firearms were stolen during break-ins of homes and vehicles; only 200 were recovered • The Bureau of ATF&E have conducted studies & found many guns do not migrate, but stay locally • The US Attorneys office has agreed to prosecute these crimes on a federal level where guns were involved • Pertinent that all serial numbers for firearms are recorded to assist in the recovery and successful prosecution of the case Burglary Task Force
Don’t leave valuables of any kind in your car, to include GPS systems, purses, loose change, & other electronics. Never leave your keys in the car, to include a spare! If you must leave valuables in your car while out, place them out of sight before reaching your destination or try do move them inconspicuously! Remember, criminals may be watching! Leave no trace of items that may be hidden in your car, such as a GPS mount or charging cables. Try to park in busy, well-lighted areas. Lock your car, roll up your windows, and set the alarm.

Cumberland County Jail currently has 568 beds to accommodate offenders • Approximately 70 of those are occupied by individuals awaiting trial • FPD arrests approximately 900 or more individuals every month *Note: FPD is NOT the only agency who utilizes this jail • Individuals who commit property crimes are more likely to be released immediately after being arrested • In the past two years, 10 correctional facilities have closed their doors in the state of North Carolina *In addition, the Department of Corrections budget was cut by $24 million dollars this year So what does all of this mean to you? So what is Community Watch and what does it do? • It is a problem-solving effort between the community and the police department • Helps to reduce all calls for service in communities • Establishes ownership in a community • Allows for cohesion in the neighborhood by helping neighbors to get to know one another • Provides a greater sense of security and well-being , thus reducing the fear of crime within the community. According to the FBI, 90% of all crime occurs after dark • With that being said, LIGHTING is the #1 deterrent of crime • Over half of the motor vehicle break-ins in our city are from unsecured vehicles • Most residential burglaries occur during the daytime while you are at work • When you leave boxes of newly purchased items on the curb, you are advertising the valuables in your home! • Approximately 95% of the cases that are prosecuted by the district attorney’s office are those that have been charged by the Fayetteville Police Department Did you know?
