  1. PRIME/GreenLight project Miguel Erazo1, Reng Zeng1, Su Liu1, Yu Huang1, Jingxuan Li1, Song Jiewei2, Wang Kongmin2, Li Ji2, Rogerio Rondini3 1 Florida International University 2 Chinese Academy of Sciences 3 Polytechnic School from Sao Paulo University July 2009

  2. Outline • Motivation • Objectives • PRIME network simulator • Milestones GreenLight Education & Outreach Summer Workshop

  3. Motivation • “The information technology industry consumes as much energy and has roughly the same carbon “footprint” as the airline industry” • “Every dollar spent on power for IT equipment requires that another dollar be spent on cooling” GreenLight Education & Outreach Summer Workshop

  4. Objectives • Provide the scientific community useful guidelines regarding the energy consumption of distributed simulations/emulations • Develop a large-scale Grid application performance evaluation platform based on PRIME GreenLight Education & Outreach Summer Workshop

  5. The PRIME network simulator • Simulator /Emulator of computer networks based of the SSF specifications • Able to simulate from tens of thousand to millions of nodes • Emulation is supported via OpenVPN • Distributed simulation/emulation supported through MPI GreenLight Education & Outreach Summer Workshop

  6. The PRIME network simulator Network model Emulation infrastructure Distributed simulation GreenLight Education & Outreach Summer Workshop

  7. A specific deployment The network model: topology, traffic, and applications Define alignments, partition the network and map to physical machines GreenLight Education & Outreach Summer Workshop

  8. Milestones • Download, compile and Run simple network models on a PC running Linux • Understand what is PRIME, how to specify and run experiments • Download, compile and Run simple network models on Teragrid • Download, compile and Run simple and distributed network models on Teragrid GreenLight Education & Outreach Summer Workshop

  9. Milestones (2) • Learn how to submit jobs using PBS on Lincoln • Find out the feasibility of enabling emulation (OpenVPN must be installed on each machine which connects to PRIME) • Look for an appropriate way to measure/approximate/estimate energy consumption for applications GreenLight Education & Outreach Summer Workshop

  10. Milestones (3) • According to the available resources, choose an appropriate application for running in a distributed environment • Implement final system • Collect results for different partitions of the network GreenLight Education & Outreach Summer Workshop

  11. Timeline GreenLight Education & Outreach Summer Workshop

  12. Thanks! GreenLight Education & Outreach Summer Workshop
