Introduction Alkenes are molecules that have rigid structures because the double bonds they contain are usually unable to rotate. When exposed to light, alkenes can undergo isomerization, a process where rotation of the double bond occurs. As a result the molecule can change its shape in response to light. In this work a complex was synthesized that has a cavity made up of double bonds so that it can change its size. The smallest cavity size is appropriate for binding arginine. Its ability to change its shape using arginine as a template will be investigated in future work.
