People (especially women) do not like to tell their weight. There are many adjectives to describe body size, with different connotations. Fat is considered rude, because it’s too direct. A person would say, “My dog is fat,” but not “ My mother is fat.” Heavy is considered more polite. Obese (超重) is a medical term. Clothing stores for overweight people are usually labeled with Pleasant-sounding terms like plus-size for women, or big and tall for men. There are also several adjectives for underweight people: Thin is a neutral,(中性) Descriptive word for both sexes. Slender is a positive(褒义)word applied to women. Skinny is negative (贬义) for both sexes and gives the idea of poor health.
