RSRL Waste & Nuclear Material Transfers Key Objective To gain security benefits by transferring Waste and Nuclear Material from Harwell, making use of facilities across the NDA estate in line with ‘Strategy 2’. Scope The permanent removal of all identified material (Dragon, LEU, CHILW &CLDs). 2

Rail method of operation • Multi modal-currently used for both nuclear and non nuclear • Road transfer from Harwell to railhead • Rail transfer from railhead to Sellafield • Up to 4 packages per movement ~300 rail moves
Programme • Business case submitted Sept 11 • Enabling works through to 2013 • Transfer operations 2013 to 2017
Closure of RSRL Winfrith • Decommissioning of all RSRL facilities • Hand back to NDA • Consideration of transfer of waste to other sites • Impact to existing tenants • Delivery of the programme
