Gifts of the Holy Spirit Only Apostles Imparted Gifts of Holy Spirit Acts 8:4-25 Philip in Samaria - converted Simon Peter and John came from Jerusalem and laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit v. 18-19 “When Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit Rom. 1:11 “For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established”

Gifts of Tongues • (8) “Various tongues” • (9) “Interpretation of tongues”

Varity of Gifts 1 Cor. 12:4-11 Gifts Were to Confirm the Preaching “They went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs.“ Mk. 16:20 "For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established” Rom. 1:11

  8. 2. Varity of Gifts 1 Cor. 12:4-11 These Gifts Were to Cease 1 Corinthians 13:8 “Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.” 1Cor. 13:9 “For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.”

  9. 2. Varity of Gifts What is “That which is Perfect”? • 2nd Coming of Christ • - Why did Paul not say: • “But when Christ is come” • - In part state now • Col.2:10 “You are complete in Him” Completion of Revelation - “perfect” - full, complete, mature - Jas.1:25 “perfect law of liberty”

Varity of Gifts The Gifts have Ceased • “perfect law of liberty” describes the gospel revealed • Now the Spirit works through the Word to accomplish His work. • The Spirit: sanctifies, convicts, saves and continues to exert power (1 Pet. 1:2; Jn. 16:8; Tit. 3:5) • When God’s Word was completed then the signs were no longer needed.

Varity of Gifts The Gifts have Ceased • The church is older than the New Testament • “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?” • Heb. 2:3-4
