Age of Exploration Chapter 4, Section 1 EQ: How did European Exploration affect Georgia?
Outline • Marco Polo’s Travels • Explorers • Christopher Columbus (Italy) • John Cabot (England) • Vasco da Gama (Portugal) • Ferdinand Magellan (Portugal) • Differences • Similarities • Spanish vs. Other European Explorers • Guale Missions • England vs. the Spanish Armada
I. Marco Polo’s Travels • Marco Polo’s book Travels inspired people to look for a water route to Asia because of the vast riches that were there.
II. Explorers • Christopher Columbus (Italy): made 4 voyages to North America. Died before people realized it wasn’t Asia. /facepalm\ • John Cabot (England): “discovered” Newfoundland in present-day Canada. Established a British foothold in North America. • Vasco da Gama (Portugal): sailed East around Africa to reach India.
II. Explorers (Continued) • Ferdinand Magellan (Portugal): first person to circumnavigate the globe (go all the way around it). Magellan died along the way, but his crew completed the voyage. • Differences: Columbus thought he was in Asia, Cabot sailed for England, Da Gama went east & reached India, Magellan went west & reached Asia. • Similarities: All were looking for a faster route to Asia.
III. Spanish vs. Other European Explorers • Spanish were after the “3 G’s” (Gold, Glory & Gospel). • Spanish explored much of South America & the Caribbean • Spanish set up missions in Florida & Georgia
IV. Guale Missions • Spanish established 1st colony in the New World • Named the barrier island region Guale for the natives who were living there. • Founded missions in Georgia • Establishment of missions & colonies gave Spain lots of wealth & power (and resentment from other European countries)
V. England vs. the Spanish Armada • The defeat of the powerful Spanish Armada gave England an advantage in exploring & colonizing the New World • England & Spain became bitter rivals • Georgia is established as England’s 13th colony to be a “buffer” between Spanish Florida and the other English Colonies.
