Mastering Japanese Adjectives: Positive, Negative, Past Tense

Learn about いadjectives Examples of い adjectives positivenegativepast tense neg. past tense • つまらないつまらなくない　つまらなかった　 つまらなくなかった • たのしいたのしくない　　たのしかった たのしくなかった • ひどいひどくない　　　　ひどかった ひどくなかった • うるさいうるさくない　　　うるさかった うるさくなかった -Notice that all adjectives end with い -Notice that all neg. adjectives end with くない -Notice that all past tense adjectives end with かった -Notice that all neg. past tense adjectives end with くなかった ★JUST REMEMBER THE ENDINGS!!!

3. How to change いadjectives ★To negative Drop いand simply replace with くない. ex. すうがくは　やさしい　です。　すうがくは　やさしくないです。 eng. Math is easy. Math is not easy. ★To past tense Drop いand replace with かった. ex. 私の　くるまは　はやい　です。　私の　くるまは　はやかった　です。 eng. My car is fast. My car was fast. ★To neg. past tense Drop いand replace withくなかった. ex. こうえんは　うるさい　です。　こうえんは　うるさくなかったです。 eng. The park is noisy. The park was not noisy.

About なadjectives… Examples of な adjectives positive negative past tense neg. past tense きれい（な）　　きれいじゃない　　　きれいでしたきれいじゃなかった べんり（な）　　べんりじゃない　　　べんりでしたべんりじゃなかった ゆうめい（な）　ゆうめいじゃない　　ゆうめいでしたゆうめいじゃなかった いろいろ（な）　いろいろじゃない　　いろいろでしたいろいろじゃなかった -Usually don’t end in　い. -Always use な　in front of noun. -DO NOT useなwhere no noun to modify.

5. How to use なadjectives ★Use なin front of noun… ex.　日本で　でんとうてきなうちが　たくさん　あります。 eng. There are many traditional houses in Japan. ★DO NOT use な when there is no noun to modify ex. 日本のうちは　でんとうてき　です。 eng. Japanese houses are traditional.

6. Joining adjectives. Joining いadjectives… Ex. わたしの　くるまは　あたらしくて　たかい　です。 Eng. My car is new and expensive. How? Drop い and add くて. Joining な adjectives… Ex. わたしの 日本語の　せんせいは　ゆうめいで　しんせつ　です。 Eng. My Japanese teacher is famous and kind. How? add で how simple!
