More than ever it is time for all of us to educate ourselves on the second largest religion in the world. 8/10

Mr. Weiss Islam Presentation Origins of Islam • Prophet Muhammad born on the Arabian Peninsula about 570 CE in the city of Makkah • Makkah was the site of an important house of worship called the Ka’bah, which the Arabs associated with the Prophet Abraham (Ibrahm) and his son Ishmael (Ismail) • From 610 to 622 CE, Muhammad received revelations from Allah and he transmitted them to his followers in Arabic. • The words were written down and in to the Qur’an • Muslims believe it to be the direct word of God 8/10

Mr. Weiss Islam Presentation Origins of Islam • During centuries following the rise of Islam and the expansion of the Muslim state, spread across parts of Africa, Europe and Asia. • Between 1500 and 1800 CE Islam continued to spread, mostly in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, West Africa and Southeast Asia. • During the 19th century European colonization of Muslim regions increased the economic and political effects of the growing shift in manufacturing and trade toward Europe’s favor. • After World War Two nearly all of today’s modern Muslim countries had achieved independence from European powers. • Today we have more than 50 countries with Muslim majorities and dozens more with significant minorities. 8/10

Mr. Weiss Islam Presentation Allah: “I believe in Allah, in His Angels, in His Books, in His messengers, in the Last Day (Day of Judgement) and in the fact that everything good or bad is decided by Allah, the Almighty,,and in the life after death. Angels of Allah: Angels are a special creation of Allah. They have been created from divine light (Nur) to perform specific duties. Books of Allah: Tawrah (Torah/Old Testament); Zabur (Psalms of Dawid); Injtl (Gospel/New Testament); and the Qur’an, reveal to Muhammad . Qur’an also mentions the Suhuf of Ibrahim (Scripture of Abraham) 8/10

The Day of Judgement: We will be judged on the basis of our intentions on the Day of Judgement. If we follow Allah’s guidance we will be rewarded; if not, we will be punished. 8/10

  10. Mr. Weiss Islam Presentation Destiny: Allah has fixed a set course for everything in the universe. Nothing can happen without the will and the knowledge of Allah. The destiny of every creature is already known to Allah. Life After Death: A Muslim believes that he will be rewarded in the life after death for all his good actions. He will live in Heaven, a place of eternal happiness and peace. Wrong-doers will be punished on the Day of Judgement and will be sent to Hell, a place of severe punishment and suffering. 8/10

Salah (Five Compulsory Daily Prayers) – Prayers are offered five times daily 8/10

  13. Mr. Weiss Islam Presentation Five Basic Duties or Five Pillars of Islam Zakah (Welfare Contribution) – This is to be paid once a year on your entire wealth at the rate of 2 ½% per year. It is a compulsory payment and is neither charity or a tax. Sawm (Fasting During Ramadan) – All Muslims must fast from dawn to sunset every day of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. 8/10

  14. Mr. Weiss Islam Presentation The Qur’an It is the sacred book of Muslims and the main source of Law in Islam. Muslims believe word of the Qur’an is from Allah. It is believed to be the final revelation from Allah to mankind. Previous books remain unchanged, however the Qur’an remains unchanged. 8/10

  15. Mr. Weiss Islam Presentation Shari’ah (Islamic Law) This is the code of law for the Islamic way of life. The word Shari’ah means a clear straight path or example. It is the system of law from Allah for humanity to follow. It is based on the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet. It has rules for every aspect of life. 8/10

Mr. Weiss Islam Presentation – Sects of Islam The two major groups within the Islam are the Sunni and Shia (Shiite) – the Sunni considered by many the “orthodox” branch of Islam, making up the majority (90%) of practitioners in the world. The Shia are concentrated in a handful of nations including Iraq and Iran. Islam split into the two factions after the death of the Prophet Muhammad. The Sunni backed a series of appointed caliphs as head of the faith – the Shia believed a series of Imams descended from the Prophet were the true leaders of Islam. But, Sufism, like the rest of Islam is hardly a monolith; there are a multitude of orders and schools practicing today, including several that sprang up in the West. 8/10
