  6. On the top of the second flap, write the word Cuneiform Don’t forget to cut the top flaps ONLY, not the bottom flaps

  7. Cuneiform • First form of writing • Developed in Sumer (Mesopotamia) • Written on clay tablets with a wedge-shaped stylus

  8. Why write? • Writing began in Mesopotamia to keep records of business transactions and to label products. • Writing helped people record their own history, literature, trade records, and even everyday activities.

  15. Cartouche Cartouche: An oval with the person’s name written on it. Originally on king or queen’s coffin, then on everybody’s Why would the Egyptians have made these and placed them in coffins? They believed it helped your soul find your body in the afterlife

Time to practice your hieroglyphic skills • Write your own name in hieroglyphics on a sheet of paper • Write your pharaoh's name on a cartouche so he/she can go to the afterlife • Write down a secret message in hieroglyphics to a partner. • Switch messages with your partner and decode the message.

  17. You’re finished! Check to make sure your flip book is completed before moving on to the MAY DO’S
