  3. Nursing CareersNow You: LET’S START FROM THE BEGINNING TO BECOME A REGISTERED NURSE TAKE COLLEGE PREP CLASSES IN HIGH SCHOOL • ENGLISH - 4 YEARS • MATH - 3-4 YEARS (INCLUDE ALGEBRA & GEOMETRY) • SCIENCE – 2-4 YEARS • SOCIAL STUDIES – 3-4 YEARS • FOREIGN LANGUAGE – 2 YEARS

CHOOSE THE TYPE OF NURSING SCHOOL YOU WANT TO ATTEND • BECOMING A RN IN CALIFORNIA: • 3 TYPES OF PRE-LICENSURE NURSING PROGRAMS • ADN Associate Degree in Nursing • BSN Bachelor of Science in Nursing • ELM Entry Level Masters Program in Nursing • 2 ALTERNATIVE ROUTES • LVN 30 Unit Option • Military Corpsmen

ADN: • Takes 2-3 years. • Offered at many community colleges • Prepares you to provide registered nursing • care in numerous settings • BSN: • Takes 4 years • Also referred to as a Baccalaureate degree. • Offered at any settings and to move to administrative and leadership positions • ELM: • Designed for adults who have a baccalaureate degree in another field and wish to become registered nurses. • Takes 1-2 years depending on how • many nursing course prerequisites you have already completed. • Graduate receives a masters degree.

LVN 30 Unit Option: • Designed as a career ladder for California Licensed Vocational Nurses wishing to become registered nurses. • Takes 1.5 – 2 years • No degree is granted upon completion • Most other states do not recognize CA LVN 30 Unit Option and willnot issue RN licenses to these LVSs. • Some LVSs prefer to complete an AND program in order to obtain a degree and to have the flexibility to get an RN license in other states. • Most AND programs will give LVNs credit for some of the coursework they completed to become an LVN. • Military Corpsmen: • California law permits military corpsmen to take the national exam for RN licensure if they have completed RN level education and clinical experience.

Obtain an RN License • To practice as an RN in California, you must be licensed by the California State Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) • You must: • meet educational requirements • pass a criminal background check • Pass the national licensing examination • Apply for an Interim Permit if you wish to work I a supervised nursing capacity while awaiting the results of your examination • Application package and instructions are on the BRN website…or contact the BRN in Sacramento

  12. Advanced Specialty Nursing • Clinical Nurse Specialist • Usually “in hospital” or clinic advanced specialization in: • Intensive Care • Trauma or Emergency Care • Psychiatry • Pediatrics • Neonatology • Gerontology

  13. Advanced Specialty Nursing Continued • Nurse Anesthetist • Administer anesthesia • Monitor patients during surgery • Assist anesthesiologists (who are physicians)

Advanced Specialty Nursing Continued • Nurse Practitioner • Take Health Histories • Perform basic physical examinations • Order Laboratory tests and other procedures • Refer patients to physicians • Help establish treatment plans • Treat common illnesses such as colds or sore throats • Teach and promote optimal health

Advanced Specialty Nursing Continued • Public Health Nursing • Work at County, State, National and International Levels • Monitor health trends and identify health risk factors unique to specific communities • Set local priorities for health-related interventions to provide the greatest benefit to the most people • Advocate with local, state and federal authorities to improve access to health services for underserved communities • Design and implement health education campaigns and disease prevention activities, such as immunizations and screenings • Tell people about locally available health care programs and services to improve access to care • Educate and provide direct health care services to vulnerable and at risk populations.

From the Bureau of Labor Statistics: “Total employment is expected to increase by 20.5 million jobs from 2010 to 2020, with 88 percent of detailed occupations projected to experience employment growth. Industries and occupations related to health care, personal care and social assistance, and construction are projected to have the fastest job growth between 2010 and 2020. Jobs requiring a master’s degree are expected to grow the fastest, while those requiring a high school diploma will experience the slowest growth over the 2010–20 timeframe. Slower population growth and a decreasing overall labor force participation rate are expected to lead to slower civilian labor force growth.”

As a High School Student: What Should I do Now? • Healthy Behaviors • Sleep at least 8 hours nightly • Eat Breakfast Lunch and Dinner and include foods from all five food groups (see www.mypyramid.gov) from USDA (US Department of Agribusiness • Exercise daily • Spend time with family and friends • Keep your stress levels at a minimum • Minimize risky behaviors • Take care of yourself so that you can take care of others!
